What backyard isn’t complete without a cozy fire pit! I’m here to show you a super easy DIY fire pit that you can do with very few tools or skills! My family is lucky to have a large back yard so for years we have been debating where the perfect spot to put the fire pit would be. Follow along as I share how we created our simple outdoor Brick Fire Pit!

    Choosing the fire pit location

Some of the things we were considering for the fire pit location were:

    – Direction of the evening sun (it gets chilly at night time in Alberta quite quickly so we wanted sun exposure)
    – Shelter from the wind (northwest winds are most prevalent in the summer so we wanted a spot where the trees would protect us from the wind)
    – Distance from the house … this was my most important consideration. I hate when the smoke blows into the house, but I wanted the fire pit close enough that it was convenient to go back to the house to grab food and condiments for wiener roasts.

So this Spring we finally decided on where the fire pit would go! Originally the fire pit idea I had was to build a massive stone fireplace, but after getting a quote a few years ago that is would have cost over $10,000 I started to think of new ideas. I do love a minimal style so I wanted something easy, affordable and maintainable. Another important consideration was that I wanted a fire pit that the lawnmower could easily mow around without having to weed whip! So we figured a simple DIY fire pit was the solution!

A fire pit feature that my husband and I wanted was for it to be sunk into the ground because we feel it puts off more heat when sitting around it. I have also been loving incorporating brick features on our property like the brick pillars at the end of the driveway and our brick patio (patio pavers but they look like whitewashed red bricks).

You cannot find solid bricks anymore, they all have 3 holes in them so they are not as solid and durable as they once were! Checking out my local salvage shop Uniquities was my first stop. They had pallets of Salvaged bricks from France! The bricks had the perfect white and creamy patina that I was envisioning and they were on sale!!

Below is my 5 step Fire Pit Tutorial. I would say this project is Easy to Medium Difficulty. I have listed all of the material and tools that I used to complete this project. Leave me a comment if you have any questions or if you try this project I would love to see it!

    1. Bricks or a Solid Stone (not the new light weight bricks with holes in them)

    2. Regular Sand (or dirt if sand is not available)

    3. Polymeric Sand

    4. Plastic Edging

    5. 8″ spikes for holding down plastic edging

    6. Strong Glue

    7. Grass Seed

    8. Spray Paint

    1. Shovel

    2. Rubber Mallet

    3. Hammer

    4. Level

    5. String & Spike for drawing circle outline of fire pit.

So to construct the fire pit we first determined the size of the fire pit. We laid out the bricks so we could get a visual. Next, strip away the sod and some of the top soil. Use anything that is convenient to pound into the centre of the fire pit (in this case a crow bar). Then attach a spike and string to make a circular outline in the dirt, this allows you to get a perfect circle.

Our idea was to have our DIY fire pit be approximately 46” in diameter. My husband dug out the dirt and then dug down approximately 12”. When working with items like salvaged bricks be lenient on the diameter because you will be unlikely to get the perfect diameter.

From a previous project we had some extra bricks with the 3 holes in them that were laying around. You could however use whatever brick or stone you are using for the rest of the project. We used these extra bricks to form the base of the fire pit in the dirt. Stand the bricks up vertically and then use a rubber mallet to sink them into the walls and floor of the fire pit.

Next, we filled the bottom of the fire pit with approx. 4” of sand (we stole the sand from our kiddos sand pile hehe) you could also just add dirt to the bottom as well. Fill in the bottom to give the vertical bricks some support.

We also used a layer of sand on top of the bricks to create a more level surface for placing the bricks on. You can be as picky as you would like with this step… we used a level a couple of times but didn’t get too particular.

The next step was to place the bricks to make the circular shape of the fire pit. Once we got the bricks all laid in you may find they don’t fit perfectly so you may need to adjust your circle slightly. Or the bonus with using salvaged bricks was that each brick was unique so we just swapped a couple out until we got the right fit.

Use the rubber mallet again to tamp the bricks down. The idea was to have the bricks be level with the grass so we could mow the grass without weed whipping. This is where the outer row of bricks came in. We placed bricks in the same formation around the first row of bricks. This row was sunk down as well so that dirt can be pushed up against the bricks and the grass can grow at approximately the same height as the bricks.

A product I learned about while doing our patio was Polymeric Sand! Old patio pavers used to be filled with regular sand and the grass could grow between the pavers and the pavers could shift. Polymeric Sand is like a flexible concrete. It allows the pavers to shift slightly but the grass has never grown up between them.

Another product I learned about while doing the patio was the plastic edging. This edging helps keep the bricks in place and also holds the polymeric sand in.

Invest the time & use a boarder to hold the bricks in place

    ~Brittany

I placed the plastic trim around the bricks and used 8” spikes to secure the plastic border.

Dump the polymeric sand onto the bricks and then use a brush to sweep it into the little cracks. I also brushed the sand off of the top of the bricks because I didn’t’ want the sand covering the bricks. If any of the sand is left on the top of the bricks it will stay there and will be very hard to remove later on.

To activate the polymeric sand requires water! I lightly began watering down the bricks and the sand began to solidify. Water the bricks down again after about 10 minutes and then leave them. The sand takes about 3 days to fully cure and harden so try to avoid moving the stones or placing heavy objects on them for a few days!

Once the base was completed, we wanted to give the fire pit a bit of character and a place to rest wiener sticks while cooking. You won’t be able to put the sand in between the bricks on the second level because there would be no border to hold the sand in. I also liked the look of seeing the gaps in the bricks.

Lay out the upper layer of bricks to get the proper spacing. To keep the bricks from shifting I glued them down with PL premium glue. I did not overdo the glue as I figured if the bricks ever came off, I could just easily apply a bit more glue.

Then, backfill with black dirt up to the trim and brick and you can reseed with grass.

There you have it, an easy DIY fire pit. I love that with this design you can make any size fire pit you would like. You can also use any type of brick you would like as well.

Now, this fire pit took us a few months to complete. We were just winging it and coming up with the design on our own and didn’t know what products we would all need. You should be able to find the plastic trim at you local Hardware Store. We were getting spare chunks from a landscape friend and we didn’t get enough the first time. However, if you had all of your products prepared you could probably take on this project in an afternoon!

You can also check out the unique wood burning fireplace that Deb has redone in her back yard.

I hope this project allows you to get out and enjoy time outside with your family this summer and fall!

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE ARTISAN BAKERY STYLE BREAD IN 5 STEPS

If you only have active yeast there is a slight variation to take, but the results are the same!

Add the 1.5 cups of warm water to a bowl.
Pour in 3/4 tsp. active yeast to the water.
Next add 1/2 tsp. white sugar to the bowl. The yeast needs the sugar to “eat and grow.”
Let the yeast water sit for approximately 15 minutes. Give the yeast mixture a gentle stir and then add to the flour and salt and continue recipe as directed above.

If you make this easy, yummy artisan bread, make sure to let us know your thoughts below and tag us in your photos on social media! It really is the easiest bread to make!

    Front-View-Porch-Swing-Bed-Cushions

There is something so relaxing about a Porch Swing Bed! As soon as you add the ability to swing back and forth on a pretty bench, the space becomes more peaceful. I have that big ol’ gazebo on the front deck and was unsure what I was going to do with the space. It needed to be something that we would use, however I didn’t think another table was appropriate. When we were given this headboard/footboard that had belonged to my husbands great aunt, I knew right away that we would make a porch swing bed with it that would be perfect for the space. It was a fairly big project, but the reward of the gorgeous swing for the years to come was well worth the effort. I hope this inspires you to get the drill out and make your own – good luck and enjoy!.

    PORCH SWING MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING A PORCH SWING BED

You will likely want to keep the full length of the headboard as it is main component.  The foot board will be the sides, the door the seat, and the headboard will be the back of the swing. Ensure the door is solid wood or this project might not go so well when the first person goes to sit on your swing. Begin by determining how wide you want to your swing to be. We made our sideboards 20 inches and the door seat 17 inches. Cutting of both the the foot board and the door will based on your desired dimensions.

Cut both the foot board and the door to desired width. Next measure the size of the headboard to establish the seat length. You will want to measure in on the sides approximately 2″ in on the headboard to insure that the arms will have a spot to attach too. Mark your measurements out on your door/seat and cut appropriately.

Some and paint and  some sanding will turn this odd looking pairing into a great piece.

The swing will be attached with jute rope that was feed through two holes in each of the sides.  Rope is here was around half an inch. To reduce the chance of splinters when drilling rope holes,  make sure to initiate holes on both sides when the smaller bit penetrates through.  Hole location will determine how the swing hangs!! So try to test how it will hang before drilling the holes.

After you have the holes drilled, you will need to find the location to hang the swing. Make sure that when you are attaching the O ring to the roof that you have it in a beam. Stud finder is best way to determine this.  Use large O rings here, 3 inches at least. Desired bench hang height will be dependant on you leg size but we put our around 17 inches off the deck. For our deck we needed about 30 ft of rope to make this happen.

You will now attach all your parts together. Place the arms that you have made out of the footboard on the front side of the headboard and using 2″ screws, attach the arms through the back of the headboard. Repeat for the opposite side. Now attach the seat by drilling through the arms of the bench. Screw through the back of the bench to stabilize the seat to the headboard as well. As the screws and the door will not be strong enough to hold multiple persons, put in support beam below the seat to brace the door as well. A vertical 2×4 did the trick for us.

I also had to cover a few large areas that were cut out of the wood because it was originally used as a bed frame. I used an amazing paper clay product from Iron Orchid Designs to make my detailed moulds and I am so happy with how these turned out. See the full tutorial for the clay moulds here.

    Paper-Clay-Mold-for-Porch-Swing

To hang the porch swing bed, simply thread the rope through one side, tying it off on the inside with a strong knot, continue threading through the O-ring and back through the second hole, tying it off again on the inside.

One last trick to note, no matter how well you place your holes the swing may not sit exactly how you want it.  To stop it from sliding back get some tape and wrap it at the top of the rope just below the O ring to stop the rope from moving up and down. A little white duck tape did the trick for us in this case. Secure the tape when the bench is at desired angle.

The only thing left to do is to fill up the wine glasses, kick back and relax.

As so many of you know, Linen anything is our JAM!!! We have both collected vintage linen sheets and bedding, napkins and table cloths for years and have converted most of the bedding in our homes to linen years ago!!! Both of us love the feel and softness of the fabric as well as the durability!!  Take a peek below at our 5 top reason’s to use Linen sheets and our best tips on how to keep it white and bright!

If you have never had pure linen bedding before and you wonder what all the hype is about it, here is the low down!!!

Reason #1 to love linen sheets- they are SO soft to sleep in

The fabric is so breathable and the comfort level is off the charts! It only gets better every time you wash it! Linen is also highly absorbent so all of you that sweat in your sleep, linen won’t aid in that process. It will just help to absorb it!!

Reason #2 – Durability rating is through the roof!

You will always get your money’s worth out of linen as it is just so dang strong. There are some tips on washing linen to help it last even longer and we cover those below.

    Reason #3 –

    It’s eco-friendly!

Linen is made out of the Flax plant. The entirety of the plant is used in the process of making linen fabric so it doesn’t leave a foot print. It is also completely biodegradable! Both of us have gone through a set of sheets already and have used the old extra linen for other things around our home. Cut the left over linen into table runners, hand towels, Christmas stockings etc.  Even just hang a chunk of raw edge linen on a hook to add some texture to any space.

Reason #4 – Linen is hypoallergenic!

All of you with skin sensitivity, meet your new best friend!! This makes it the perfect choice for your children with sensitive skin as well.

Check out these amazing flax, linen pillow cases by our sweet friend Rhonda at Hallstromhome

Last, but not least, Reason #5 – It is temperature regulating.

So no matter the time of year or climate you live in, this fabric will do its job to keep you comfortable!! In the summer, you stay cool and in the winter you stay warm. What more do you want?!!

This time of year is our absolute favourite time of year to do laundry as we both like to hang everything on the line! With multiple kiddos in the house, we have learned a thing or two about how to keep our laundry looking good and stain free. Especially for Deb  because all of her  couches are white!

We have our own line of custom linens and market basket’s that can be purchased in our online shop, Vintage Society Co! They are all of our favourite pieces we have in our own homes

TIP: When it’s the cooler months and you can’t line dry your linen sheets … we wash them on a delicate cycle and then put them back on our beds slightly damp. Putting them on when they are still a bit wet lets them dry flat and with that crisp look! Linen dries fast so if you put them on damp at lunchtime they will be dry by bedtime.

So there you have it! Those are the top 5 reasons to use linen sheets for bedding and towels in your home as well as tried and tested tips to whiten and brighten laundry! We hope you give one or more of them a try and let us know your thoughts!

    Love these tips! Great info!

    Thank you so much!

Which linen sheets do you recommend? Which are the softest?

This is who we recommend for bedding. Get the bio linen as it is a bit more durable. It isn’t as soft though but will last a lot longer

    Favourite White Paint Colours

Do you look at a white wall and say that’s white paint OR do you see the soft or cool undertones, the hint of blue, pink or green? As interior designers “just white” does not exist! There are thousands of shades of white. Over the years we have found some of our favourite white paint colours and shades and we want to share them with you!

Picking the perfect white colour for your home can be tricky! Every white will look different in EVERY home! We never suggest picking a colour for your home based on someone else’s home! If you are just starting the painting journey and looking for help on how to pick out paint colours, check out this post first.

Britt and Deb have each found their own white paint colours that they love to use in their own homes. However, the 1 colour that the 2 both love is the colour for their painted floors! It is a custom colour that they created and they call it the Vintage Society White (maybe one day a paint company will create our colour??). It is the perfect warm grey shade! It’s light grey colour without being too grey or to blue or too green. When you are colour matching custom colours it can be tricky when you are switching between different brands. Even though this colour was created using Benjamin Moore Paint, even switching between the different types of paint means a new formula. Check out the custom colour formulation on the Painted Floor Blog Post. Or for quick start we took Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore and kind of cut the colouring formulation in half (this is a great place to start because it can be hard to get a Hardware Store to match the formula).

P.S. Britt’s stairs are not the same colour as the rest of her floors. The stairs are painted the same colour as her trim, banister, and stair risers because it was easier to stay consistent with this colour instead of painting around every spindle.

Are you ready to take on painted floors, but don’t know where to start? Here’s our step-by-step tutorial and how we’ve painted all our floors

Over the years Deb had various shades of whites in different rooms of her home. However, over the last few years she is converting her home to be entirely Oxford White CC-30. This beautiful white colour pairs well with so many other colours! It has a very slight blue undertone that Deb loves and has now used on both the exterior and interior of her home. When Deb first bought this house, every room had a different colour and Oxford white was the colour she used for her trim and doors. As time has gone on and her style has changed, she has slowly changed all the wall spaces in the house to this colour in a satin finish. This gives a fluid transition from room to room that she loves.

Deb also painted her tiny house with this colour! Using a solid wood stain to cover the pine shiplap walls. Her cabinets are the same colour too. The reason she loves it is because it works almost like a painters canvas to display all of her beautiful wood antiques and vintage pieces. It is gives her favourite items and collected pieces the chance to shine instead of having the walls be the focal point!

Other whites Deb has loved in the past are Porcelain by Canadian Tire and Chantilly Lace OC-65 by Benjamin Moore.

    Shop Deb’s Tiny Cabin

Britt has played around with a few different white tones in her home over the years. When her house was originally build she painted her walls a warm tone. Take Britt’s advice and always choose whiter and lighter colours than your initial thought! Over time she felt it wasn’t white enough. Britt definitely prefers warm shades of white. She loved the crisp feel of OC-65 Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore but didn’t love the blue undertone. Working with the local paint store owner she re created Chantilly Lace and came up with a custom colour. Britt calls the colour Lace and love the neutral white with a soft warm undertone.

The colour of the walls is similar to Architectural White C2-516 by C2 paint.

    Vintage Enamel Bucket

    Woven Garden Hat

    Linen Ticking Towel

    French Linen Garden Apron

For her trim she wanted a crisp bright white. Starting with a can of straight white as it comes out of the can she added a few drops of black to “crisp” up the colour. This is the only colour that Britt has not changed in her home. The colour is very similar to Whistler White by C2 paint.

Exterior Paint! Britt’s house was originally blue and red (what was she thinking). Over the course of 2 years Britt repainted her entire home using a 6” paint brush. The colour on the exterior of her house is called Linen. This is also a warm white shade. It was a custom colour mixed to match some of the eavestroughs on her home. The colour is very similar to Milk Moustache C2-692 by C2 Paint.

Britt also painted her patio pavers! Using a solid stain on the patio pavers has held up extremely well! Even pressure washing the patio pavers does not take the paint off. Because she wants a distressed look of the pavers she gently rolls the paint on. The colour on the patio pavers is Cloud White CC-40 or OC-130.

We hope you can find the perfect white shades for your home! Don’t ever let someone tell you it’s JUST WHITE! Pick out your favourites, create samples if you need to! And don’t ever let someone tell you white is boring! We live by the motto … let your walls be the canvas and the things you hang on your wall be the art that’s reflected off the canvas.

Let us help guide you to design beautiful backyard creations that you can enjoy with your friends and family this Summer!

Ready to start creating beautiful outdoor living spaces for your family? Follow our 5 step guide to design amazing backyard creations so you can start enjoying summers outdoors on your patio!

Do you admire your friends and family that have created gorgeous outdoor living spaces? Well, read on and we will give you some simple steps to help guide your backyard creations into gorgeous living spaces on your patio that will have you wanting to hang out there all summer long!

Patio season is upon us and everyone is itching to get outdoors after a long winter indoors! It’s important you take the time to really think of your outdoor living spaces as an addition to the rest of your home! We wanted to share with you 5 tips that we use as a guideline to make the most out of our backyard creations!

    ~Brittany @white.farmhouse

    SHOP THE PATIO

STEP #1 – Lighting for your Backyard Creations

You will be spending both days and nights on your patio spaces, so you will want to make sure you have great lighting for these areas!

Lighting needs to be functional and practical but still give the space style! Think of how much a light fixture can change the look of an indoor room, it’s exactly the same for an outdoor patio or dining area!

Lighting Hack Trick – While Britt has a wired in Chandelier in her fully covered patio, which FYI the chandeliers are not outdoor rated (consult an electrician before wiring in any fixture in your outdoor spaces). However did you know Deb’s patio chandelier is “just for looks!” Deb has her string lights plugged in but the chandelier is just hanging there and the light from the string lights reflects on the chandelier and makes the chandelier appear that is functional.

    STEP #2 – Greenery & Flowers

Nothing feels more like summer then fresh flowers and plants everywhere!  Both of us have nailed down some of our favorite easy to grow plants for the season! Neither one of us stray too far from these because they are beautiful all summer long and usually look just as good long into the fall.

    1. Potato Vine, also known as Solanum Jasminoides, this evergreen vine is an ornamental garden plant with white flowers or pale blue flowers that resemble jasmine. This vine is extremely fast growing and thrives in almost any condition. Britt has had success with it both in full sun and shady areas and the great thing about this vine is that you can direct it to climb and grow in any direction you choose. This vine lasts long into the fall!

    2. Wave Petunia’s are an easy to grow and care for flower that make a big impact on your patio space! They can easily be started from seed and begin flowering in early summer, right through until fall. They give our living spaces a pop of color and are a favorite because they continue to grow and bloom with very little work. Simply pull off any dead blooms and this plant will thrive well into the fall. Petunias are also extremely hardy and even if neglected and unwatered these beauties will perk back up after a good watering.

    3. Eucalyptus is another evergreen that is very easy to grow, the True Blue variation not only fills out and looks beautiful, it smells amazing too!  This lovely greenery addition grows best in full sun and will help to attract birds to your patio. Eucalyptus is also lovely to cut and bring into the house for an indoor bouquet. And the best part is that in the fall you can cut off the stems to make potpourri or make scented satchel’s.

    4. Heliotrope is a sweetly scented flower that has beautiful blooms that are a deep purple in color. They are an annual in Canada but can be tropical perennials in other parts of the world. With that said, they do not do well with the slightest amount of cold weather or frost.

    5. Lavender is by far one of the most fragrant and beautiful herbs in the garden. Both English lavender and Spanish lavender are great for on the patio. The plant loves blazing hot sunny spots and dry soil. If your lavender isn’t thriving, it’s probably due to overwatering! Although please note that some variations are being created to be more hardy for Canadian climates and can handle more moisture and shade.

    6. Hydrangeas are amazing and there are so many varieties. These big blooms can really add some personality to a patio space. Opposite to the lavender above, the hydrangea requires water daily and prefers morning sun as opposed to afternoon heat! If you would like to learn more about hydrangea care, you can check out our full post on it here.

We have found that keeping it simple with using these flowers produces beautiful planters all summer long and creates beautiful living spaces for your friends and family to enjoy.

    PATIO DECOR FAVORITES

    STEP #3 Unique Outdoor Furniture

Sometimes it’s good to step out of the traditional look and feel of the big box store furniture and the patio is just the place to do this!

We have both added pieces that could double as indoor or outdoor furniture to our living spaces on out patios! In fact Britt’s patio table was the table that was previously in her office and Deb’s new patio table was previously her dinning room table! The key is in protecting them from the weather and other elements of the outdoors. Be sure to use the right types of products to protect your furniture like outdoor paints and stains as well as outdoor polyurethanes.

Other ways to keep your furniture protected is covering your table and chairs with a painters drop cloth (the ones that have the plastic liner) when you are not using the space. Deb also had a custom piece of plexi glass cut to go on top of her pergola above her chandelier and table to prevent as much rain from getting onto the chandelier and table.

Adding unique items, like old electrical spools and farmhouse tables and antique benches make your space feel comfortable and casual. The best way to do this is to think about your favorite living spaces inside your home, what makes you love eating at your dinning room table or curling up on your couch? Now think how can I carry these elements to my outdoor living spaces?

For example our kids love to sit at a bench as opposed to dinning room chairs so we have added benches to our outdoor dinning tables so that our kids can run out to the table and sit down without struggling to pull out chairs on the bumpy patio pavers or uneven deck boards.

    OUTDOOR LIVING DECOR

STEP #4 Adding Cozy Living Spaces

There is nothing better than having a spot on your patio that you can go relax after a long day of working in the yard! Imagine working all day in the hot sun and then having a cozy living area that you can go plop down on in the shade with a cool beverage!

Britt has hanging hammock chairs on her patio and they are used daily by all members of the family! Morning lattes are also so much better enjoyed from this cozy spot as well looking out over the cows grazing in the field!

Deb has a unique DIY porch swing that gets the perfect morning sun where her and her hubby love to have their weekend coffees! Check out the details to make your own here.

Other options are couches or a traditional hammock. There are lots of tutorials for pallet couches that you can search Pinterest for. A traditional hammock on a frame can easily be moved around to find that perfect shady spot for an afternoon siesta.

STEP #5 Optimizing your backyard creations

If you have a large outdoor entertaining area, it’s a good idea to give each space a distinct purpose, similar to what you would do with your indoor spaces. A set area that is for cooking, can be paired with an outdoor dining area and a lounging area can be on its own as well.

A great place to start determining how to organize your spaces is by letting the sun be your guide. In Canada summer nights can be chilly so having more sunlight on the south and west sides may be more comfortable for staying out longer in the evening. However having a cooking area on the north side of your home like Deb’s BBQ area may be more practical.

And in hotter climates finding reprieve from the scorching summer days will be important for enjoying your evenings. So start by thinking about how much sun your family will want during different points of the day and how you can optimize either getting more heat or shade to make your backyard creations more enjoyable!

    Materials for raised planter bed

We don’t believe that you should run out and buy a bunch of tools when you are starting out DIY’ing. Try to use the tools you already have and invest when you are ready. Some of these tools can be rented for a very reasonable price as well.

    Free!

Includes a list of our favourite seeds, garden supplies and planning chart!

This tutorial will walk you thru building a 4 foot wide by 12 foot long, by 30” tall raised planter garden box. You can adjust any of these dimension. The reason the width has been selected at 4 feet is because this allows you too easily reach the middle of the garden box while planting, weeding or harvesting your garden. The height of this box is designed to limit bending over, but is still easy to work in.

This tutorial includes adding a bench that you can sit on while you work in the garden.

A downside to a taller garden box is that it can be harder to mix up the dirt. You will probably have to climb in the box when you really need to mix up the dirt in the Spring.

The image below shows where the 5 raised planters are at Britt’s home.

We love fresh cut flowers straight from the garden. HERE is a list of our favourite gardening plants and flowers.

What wood should you use to build the raised planter Box

There are a few options for materials you can use to build your raised planter bed. We recommend using cedar or untreated wood. While using untreated wood may mean that you have to paint or stain the exterior, we do not like the idea of treated lumber leaching into our food. Britt’s garden boxes are still standing after 6 years with only 1 coat of solid stain on them.

    Step by step tutorial

    1. Lay out 3 of the 2”x10” by 12 foot long planks tight together.
Measure the overall width of the 3 planks.
This will determine the length of the 4”x4” posts.

    2. Cut 8 – 4” x 4” posts to the measurement you got from step one (it should be approximately 28″)

    3. Cut 6 of the 2” x 10” planks down to 4 feet long. These will be the short sides of your garden box.

    4. Lay down 2 of the 4” x 4” posts on the ground 12’ apart.
Place the 3 – 12 foot long planks on top of the posts and screw the planks into the posts.

    5. Place a third and fourth 4” x 4” posts approximately 4 feet from the ends. Screw planks into the post.
This will help brace the long span of the planks.

    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 once again to form the other side of the box.

    7. Next, stand the 2 sides up that you have built.
Begin attaching the 4’ long planks to the corner posts.
Start with the bottom plank and work up.

    8. Repeat step 7 for the other end to form your raised planter bed.

We like to add a seat to the top of the garden box.

    9. On the Long side measure from the centre of the 4″ x  4″ post on one end to the centre of the 4″ x 4″ post on the opposite end.

    10. Attach the 1″ x 10″ plank.
The plank can only sit on half of the corner post because the bench seat on the short end will also need to rest on this corner post.
Make sure the plank is resting fully on the 4″ x 4” posts in the centre and screw the plank down onto the posts and the centre support posts.
You want the bench seat to have approximately a 4″-6″ overhang.

    11. Measure the distance from the outside edges of the bench seats you installed on the long sides.
Cut one of the 1″ x 10″ planks to this length.
Screw this plank onto the corner posts.

    12. Repeat step 11 on the opposite side. DO NOT assume each end is the same width!
Screw this final plank on and you not have a completed Raised Planter Box!!

    Lining your Garden Box

We HIGHLY recommend lining your garden box with a thick plastic. The plastic will:

    1. Help protect the wood from rotting.

    2. Help prevent grass and weeds from growing into the garden box.
Use a staple gun to attach the liner to the posts and planks.
DO NOT line the bottom of the box with plastic!

Line the bottom of the garden box with a thick layer of cardboard. This will drastically help limit the amount of weeds that grow in your garden box.

Finishing touches for your raised planter box

If you used untreated wood, we recommend using a solid stain or regular stain to protect the outside of the garden box. You are only painting or staining the outside of the boxes.

You can see below that Britt’s raised planters need to be refinished – this is after 5 years and lasting thru long snowy winters.

Now that you have gone thru the effort to build your garden box, invest in some good quality black dirt. You don’t want to start off with nutrient deficient soil. We also recommend adding some form of manure or compost to the garden box as well! Just make sure to check the correct ratio for the compost mixture as it can burn or kill your seed if you add to much. Adding about a 10% compost mixture prior to planting will really give your garden a boost each year!

*** You can also hammer in simple nails to the side of your garden boxes to hang garden tools from.

Build as many garden boxes as space allows. When spacing out the garden boxes make sure to leave room for walking and working between! Also make sure to leave room for the lawn mower to get between as well.

    Happy Gardening!!

5 Top Table Decorations For Valentine’s Day

There is something so sweet and special about decorating for Valentine’s Day. Although neither of the girls go overboard with LOVE day decorations, it is nice to add a bit of romance to your home this time of year. Both Deb and Britt added touches of Valentine’s Day table decorations to their homes this year. Take a look below at a few simple ideas and the 5 top table decorations to get you through the Valentine’s Day season! And if you are joining us today from sweet Judy’s blog, Life is Better at Home, WELCOME!

K.I.S.S. stands for keep it simple sweets! It’s the time of year to have a little fun with your table and other areas of your home. This doesn’t mean adding red hearts all over your home or light up love signs all over your house. Rather add simple textures and elements that make a space feel soft and romantic.  For both girls on their wedding day, decor was a big part of their focus! This is the one time of the year they can romance their homes like they did for their weddings! A simple but beautiful Valentine’s Day look can be achieved by adding any of these 5 elements to your home or tablescape.

    #1 Fresh Flowers

As always, both girls love to use fresh elements in their homes. Of course, roses are usually the flower of choice for most on Valentine’s day. However, we wanted to share some other blooms that bring in a touch of romance. Roses are often over priced this time of year so thinking outside the box can also save some money.

Deb used a bundle of white hydrangeas to add some softness and elegance to her Valentines table decor. She also used different textures by adding woven plate chargers underneath her french iron stone plates and bowls! Deb also cut a few branches off of a cherry tree outside. These branches add a bit of the outdoors inside, and add some texture to her arrangement. Simple yet soft and romantic!

Looking for more ways to bring outdoor elements inside? Check out some of our favourite outdoor elements!

Another option to avoid paying the hefty price tag of roses, is with simple flowers that have the colours and tones of “traditional” Valentine’s Day. Britt picked up some affordable Alstroemeria and Lillies. Alstroemeria is hearty and requires very little care! A great tip for making small bundles of flowers go further is my placing single stems in glass vases!

Deb’s 7 year old daughter thinks this is the best holiday of the year because she loves hearts so much! She helped mom out this year by using a heart shaped paper cutter to cut out pretty heart confetti. Using white printer paper and vintage book pages to get neutral colours to sprinkle around the plate setting. The two also made some yummy gingerbread mug huggers and garland by using heart shaped cookie cutters. Although, this recipe is often used for Christmas time, it worked just as well for Valentine’s Day. Simply substitute the house cookie cutter for a heart shape!

Candles are also a must when setting the mood for Valentine’s Day table decorations. Set them up individually or add them all together in a bucket like Britt has done. Deb placed hers in a small ironstone pitcher. They add an element of romance to the space whether you are celebrating with your significant other or your whole family.

Britt used an entire bucket filled with ultra skinny candles and added a few pops of colour with some fresh flowers. There is no need to go over the top with Valentine’s Day decor, even staying away from the traditional colours is ok too! Just do what works for you! At the end of the day Valentine’s Day is meant to celebrate the love and happiness you share with your family!

    #4 Linens for Table Decorations

Linen is the girl’s favourite fabric! In fact, both girls have a collection of new and vintage linen’s.  They even carry their own custom designed line over in the Shop! Linens add an element of texture to the table and soften the space.

Deb went with a large raw edge table runner she made out of old scrap linen she had. The raw edges make the space seem a little less formal then it would without it.  She also added a folded up piece underneath each of the place settings to soften the look of each setting. You could do the same with affordable towels or material if linen is too costly!

Not only does adding linen’s to a space give a softer feel, but mixing textures is a must as well! Deb also used different textures by adding woven plate chargers underneath her french iron stone plates and bowls! She also used a vintage floral bucket for her fresh flowers which gives a beautiful contrast against the wood farmhouse table.

A great rule of thumb for mixing textures is to have something:
    1. Glass
    2. Wood
    3. Linen or fabric
    4. Metal or smooth

Adding any of these decorations to your table or home this time of year will give the space a fun, romantic feel! Like we said before, this holiday doesn’t need to be taken overboard. In fact we prefer it simple and natural but it is enjoyable get in the LOVE day spirit! How do you decorate for Valentine’s Day? Do you have any traditions you keep? We would love to hear about them if you do!  Please leave us a comment below or send us a message! Happy L-O-V-E Day decorating!

Are you ready to create a SIMPLE HOME? Christmas is the time of year when we fill our homes with the most décor … from ornaments to twinkle lights to Christmas trees. We love the cozy vibes that we create in our homes this time of year and it’s okay to go a bit overboard if it makes you happy! Just as much as we love the cozy vibes of Christmas, the time that comes after Christmas can be just as good! That’s right it’s DECLUTTERING Time!

    Simple Home Style

Please remember that simplicity does not happen over night! For Britt, the transition to a simple style happened when she picked up the dozen pillows she had on her couch for the 10th time in the same day because that’s where her kids sat and played… a light bulb went off and she thought why do I need or even want all of these pillows. Simplicity is not for everyone. However, for us it’s a style that suits our families lifestyle as well!

We love to start off the New Year by doing deep cleans and going thru pantries and closets and getting rid of the old and unused and donating what we can. Trying to take on your entire home at once can be way to overwhelming! You will inevitably wear yourself out. You may end up cramming things back in closets because you are tired of going thru them! So we want to share some tips that we do so that you can start to create a more minimalistic home. Remember THIS IS a marathon NOT a sprint!

How do I start creating a minimalistic home?

Pick 1 space in your home to start with… maybe the pantry or bathroom cabinets?  Pick one space to really go in depth with and then go easier on yourself in other areas of your home!

Three years ago Britt redid her pantry and reorganized the pantry thoroughly and with her family in mind. Now, each year it’s simply a clean and reorganization to have the pantry refreshed for the start of the year.

    Simple organization tips

A couple of things that we think prevent people from being able to maintain their organization are:
    1.  making organizing unmaintainable or harder than it needs to be
    2. not allowing for changes or flexibility.

What we mean: If you limit yourself to only using specific bins and containers that are labelled a certain way, ie: using a label maker or printer to print labels, you are setting yourself up for something that is hard to maintain. When organizing is time consuming and requires a very specific action, you will be unlikely to follow through on a regular basis.

Britt used mix matched mason jars that she had multiple on hand for items in her pantry. This way if new items need to be added she can simply grab another jar and there is no need to worry about going out and buying a new matching jar. Deb has an entire cabinet in her kitchen full of mix matched vintage jars that are full of items like flour, sugar, nuts, popcorn, spices and more!

For items that need to be labeled in a specific way, ie: something that has an expiry date, try adding labels to the top of the jars instead of the front! This way no one can see the labels when looking at the space so it doesn’t need to be pretty and uniformed.

Don’t let your organization be the reason you can’t maintain a simple, organized home!

Also using various sized bins, containers and baskets allows for more versatility. Using an oversized market basket that can hold an instant pot or other odd objects allows for more flexibility. When you are organizing spaces for your family think about the day to day routines and activities of your family. For instance, Britt’s kids eat cereal multiple times a week so she incorporated cereal bins that made it easier for her kids to use. Cereal boxes were constantly getting left on the counter, and this also lets her see how much cereal is left without opening the boxes. Deb does the same for her family but uses extra large mason jars!

    DECLUTTERING

When you are doing a major reorganization:

    1. Start by pulling everything out of that space!

    2. Then go thru items and dispose of items that are expired. What do you think is the oldest item in your pantry? We bet some of you have canned goods over 10 years old!

    3. The biggest tip we can give you is to be REALISTIC! What we mean by this is to be realistic about what will work and, be maintainable for your family. Don’t buy fancy bins if you aren’t going to use them. However, if having nice containers encourages you to stay more organized, then splurge on those. Usually, spaces that you use more often, like a pantry,  make more sense to splurge on the bins and baskets . However, somewhere like the bathroom medicine cabinet, the containers don’t matter as much.

    Simple Home Decor Tips

Home Décor pieces are definitely the type of items that can pile up! Trust us we HAVE BEEN THERE! Over the last few years we have become more aware of the items that we have and purchase for our homes.

Here are a few criteria that an item must meet before we will bring it into out home:

    Changing your home decor style

Creating a simple style in your home can be hard, especially if you are used to spaces filled with multiple home décor items. So to start to create simpler spaces here is our method:

Usually we stare at spaces in our own homes so much that we think each corner needs to be filled with tones of objects. You can often stop seeing the beauty in the “bones” of your own home and thus start filling every corner with “objects.”

We know we are very lucky to have the homes we do, especially Deb’s historic home that is filled with architecture. So rather than the next time you go to spend $20 or $50 on random home décor, maybe put the money in a jar and save up for a bigger more impactful piece. Save up for items like a new light fixture, a fresh coat of paint, wallpaper or some ship lap. These items will in the end make a bigger statement for a longer period of time. When you start to let the walls of your home “breathe” and become part of your home décor is when you start to achieve a more simplistic style.

It’s your home…choose to love it!

In the end it really is about choosing to create spaces that you love! There really is something special that happens when a space is created with your family in mind! Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of items in your home and you are ready to create a simple home for your family! We would love to hear how your home decor style impacts your family or how you are minimizing and decluttering… leave a comment below!

Right there with you. I think it’s great to be intentional on what is brought into a home, whether it be decor or other useful items. Clutter bogs you down and certainly eats up time needing to be tidied often.

5 TIPS FOR A FIXER UPPER BATHROOM RENOVATION

    Fixer-Upper-Bathroom-1

After almost 6 years of living in this big ol’house, we are FINALLY renovating our main level fixer upper bathroom!!  Can you tell that I am just a little excited? Not only that; I am also beyond thrilled to have partnered and be taking part in Wayfair’s 1 Room Renovation challenge with this renovation! Wayfair carry’s such a huge selection of beautiful products which made it very easy to come up with a plan for this space, all from the comfort of my home!

There are some simple steps I always swear by to make all my renovations easier.  I thought I would share those with you, along with my plans and product for this upcoming renovation! Take a peek below at my 5  Tips For A Fixer Upper Bathroom Renovation!

Whether you are working with a small or a large area, or a fixer upper vs. a new build, you need to write down your priorities from highest to lowest! This will help you in the decision-making process throughout the entire bathroom renovation project.

    Before-View-Fixer-Upper-Bathroom-1

For us, a bathtub and shower in this space is a must! We only have two bathrooms in this big ol’house and unfortunately, they are both pretty itty bitty. As much as I would have loved to leave this bathroom as a half bath, my husband had a tub/shower as his highest priority for this room. I wanted it to stay true to the age and style of the home and I found both my beautiful freestanding tub and polished chrome faucet on Wayfair!

The tub size was going to be tricky but with the huge selection they have on there I found it right away! I also found the most beautiful polished chrome shower faucet that should look gorgeous.

We also had to decide on the placement of the door entering into this space. Currently, the door comes right off the kitchen! The decision was made to move the door to enter under the stairs so that it no longer comes right off the kitchen. Which brings me to my next point in this fixer upper renovation process.

    Tiny-Farmhouse-Bathroom-Renovation-1

Measure, tape and measure again! When you are lucky enough to be able to physically stand in the space you are going to renovate, take advantage and measure out your plan!

So many times people I know who have completed a new build only to say, it’s much smaller or larger in here than they thought it was going to be! Measure every item that you plan to put in the space out and tape it out on the floor or walls prior to the renovation starting.

My new vanity is going to be an old desk with a gorgeous vessel sink from Wayfair. This beautiful faucet that fits true to the age of the home from Wayfair and a gorgeous vessel sink  will be the perfect addition!

I love that it has the soap dish on top for a little bit of added detail! Ok on to the next tip!

Begin a good ol’Execl spreadsheet! Have a Budget in place, but just know that when taking on a fixer upper bathroom renovation you need to plan for the unknown!!  Putting all of my project information into a spreadsheet is important. Keeping it organized and to be able to find any information I need quickly and to reference if I am staying within budget as I go. Make sure to keep website links to products and pricing quotes/invoice amounts all in this spreadsheet!

    Tiny-Bathroom-Renovations-2

Leave a column for the renovation schedule, timing of product arrival and contractors start /completion dates. You don’t want to be the one holding up your renovation due to poor time management.

    Tiny-Fixer-Upper-Bathroom-2

Walk through your routine in this space. Do you do your makeup here, your hair??? Or do you want it to attach to a closet? Is there enough room to put a linen closet? Think through a typical day for this space and what you will need to require to be functional.

    Renovating-A-Tiny-Farmhouse-Bathroom

If you are using it for any of these things, you will want to think about the lighting. I chose to go with two gorgeous Edison bulb sconces and an antique chandelier for the center of the room!

    Bathroom-Mirror-Update

Storage – Never overlook the need for storage in a bathroom! This is one element I am not going to have a lot of no matter what I plan for! The space is small! I’m choosing to go with a piece of furniture rather than a traditional vanity. There is a ton of storage right outside this space that I will be able to use for holding toiletries and such! I also purchased a beautiful antique basket to go under the vanity. The basket can hold items such as towels and toilet paper.

    Tiny-Fixer-Upper-Farmhouse-Vanity

Waterproof – If there is one space you want to go overboard on the tile on, this would be it! As much as I love a beautiful hardwood floor, it is much more practical in a fixer upper bathroom renovation to go with a tile of sorts!

    Tiny-Bathroom-Before-View

Unless you’re a Kardashian, this space is probably not going to be the biggest room in your home. However, it can still have a big impact on your day to day. Chose finishes that complement each other and that you are drawn to. I found a beautiful vintage chandelier at an antique shop. The chandelier is going to hang in front of the bath tub. Gorgeous marble Carrera tile will be carried through out the space!

The mirror is from Wayfair and I love that it will complement the colour of the chandelier, the Edison bulb sconces and the toilet paper roll holder. Don’t be afraid to mix your metals like I am going to, when it’s done well it looks amazing!!

As you can tell I am very excited that this renovation is finally happening! Rest assured, I will post more progress as I go along with the project. My hope is that those of you who are going to be renovating a similar space in your home soon, will find this post useful and can take something away from it for your own renovation.
