    Simple Social Tools

We are assuming that you are interested in any tips and tricks you can get on this whole social media world! We get it!!!  It seems to always be changing and can sometimes feel totally overwhelming and consuming! Are we right?? Well there are definitely a few apps out there that can make it all a bit more manageable and allow you to stand out from the rest!

We have both been at this whole social media game for some time now. Even so, everyone seems to tell you something different when it comes to social media but these are the apps that make the biggest difference for us! Whether you are a business, brand or blogger these apps should make life a bit easier for you and allow you to stand out from the crowd!

This simple social tool truly helps you stay consistent on your feed and organized prior to posting. The app allows you the ability to view your feed prior to posting on Instagram! Preview: Planner for Instagram allows you to batch content which will help you during the week to not eat up time posting on the fly or deleting after the fact because you don’t love how the image looks with the rest of your feed!

    Social Media Apps to avoid

So while there are some helpful apps out there we also want to chat about some that you should avoid! Avoid any of those apps that track accounts that unfollow you! First those apps can take you down a spiral tunnel of doubting and questioning if you are good enough. Second, if someone doesn’t want to follow you then you don’t need their negative energy around you anyway!

Next, avoid social media apps that can track things like your engagement and stats specific about your followers. Information like this is available when you become a business or creator account on Instagram. The information that the apps themselves are giving to the users is more than enough information to help you determine posting times and the analytics of your audience.

Allowing these 3rd party apps access to your social media accounts puts you at risk for having your account hacked and technically the information they are gathering is not as accurate as the app itself. Britt used to have a few of these apps installed on her phone and it actually hindered her engagement and growth.

To sum it up AVOID trying to gather information from third party apps than you are giving access to your accounts that you work so hard on!

    KEEP IT Simple

Well, that is that friends! These apps really are our go to’s for both our business and personal social media brands and we hope you enjoyed this post on simple social tools! They help us get great results quickly and easily, which is what it is all about! We hope you find them as easy to use and impactful as we do!! We would love to hear if you have any go to apps that you use!  As always, we are real people behind this post, so let us know your thoughts in the comments below or send us an email.

Such great information and tips! Thanks, Deb and Britt! :o)

    Glad you found them useful.

Furniture Refinishing  – 6 Steps to a Natural or Raw Wood Finish

Owning a home decor business has its perks and being able to find beautiful antiques is one of them! I have always loved one of a kind, handmade antique furniture more than modern day mass produced pieces. There is just something special about knowing that one person put some much of themselves into that cabinet or hutch that just sits well with me.

In my life, I have been fortunate to come across some stunning pieces, some of them I have refinished and some I have painted! Right now I am really digging furniture refinishing in a natural raw wood look on my pieces and I am so happy with how this most recent dresser turned out! Below are the 6 steps to refinish antique furniture to a natural or raw wood finish.

    Enjoy!

Steps refinish antique furniture to a natural or raw wood finish

Steps refinish antique furniture to a natural or raw wood finish

DIRECTIONS For achieving the raw wood finish

    1) Clean the Piece – Nothing crazy, just a quick once over with a damp cloth will do. Unless the piece is in need of more just a quick wipe will do.

    2) Paint Stripper if Necessary – As much as I hate this stuff, it really does speed up the refinishing process! The stripper does all the heavy lifting for you and will cut your sanding time down a lot.  I prefer a gel product that you can let sit for 5-10 minutes before scrapping off with a putty knife or blade.

    3) Sand the Body of the Piece – I use 60 grit sandpaper with an orbital sander. I think the key is to make sure you are not letting the sand paper get to used or cruddy. It might cost a bit more in sand paper to replace it more ofter but it’s totally worth it in your time and elbow grease.

    4) Sand the Tricky Areas. Again, I use 60 grit sandpaper with a mouse sander. This is my favourite sander as it isn’t as easy to damage the piece with it and it gets into those corners so much better than an orbital sander can.

Do your best to get the corners clean but I am not super picky if I miss a bit. I feel like you can get away a bit of colour variation if you have an old piece. If you can’t remove the Use stripper in the edges if necessary

    5) Dust and Clean – Use a stiff bristled brush to dust all the left over sand or dust off and use a damp cloth or rag to wipe the piece down. This is important if you are going to seal the piece with a product

    6) Wax or Spray Finish –  Use a polyurethane or clear wax the top of the piece to seal and protect the piece. This may change the colouring of the piece to a slightly darker finish but if you are worried about water damage or any other products damaging the finish then this step is necessary

If you are wanting the look but not into the dirty work that comes with it, this Restoration Hardware antique inspired St. James Dresser will give you all the vintage feels.

Restoration Hardware Antique Inspired Dresser ST. JAMES 3-DRAWER DRESSER

I hope you enjoyed my steps to refinish antique furniture to a natural or raw wood finish. Like painting an antique piece with chalk paint, it can seem like a lot of work but it is so worth it when you have a beautiful timeless piece in the end.

What types of finishes are you into at the moment? Painted, dark stains or natural raw wood?  Would you ever refinish an antique back to a raw wood finish? Leave me a comment in the comments below as I always love hearing what you have to say.

Do you have shiplap in your home? Do you want to install shiplap in your home? While some designers are saying shiplap is on it’s way out, there are lots of us who would disagree. Shiplap has been around for over a century and there are reasons that we still love it’s applications in our homes!

    Do’s and Don’ts of shiplap

There are hundreds of ship lap tutorials out there so this isn’t a full tutorial on on installing shiplap. Rather, we want to share some of the biggest tips we have learned along the way from personally installing it.

    DO’S

    DON’TS

Before you take the leap into the world of shiplap consider a few things!

What do you have for baseboards and trim?
Is it better to start at the ceiling or floor with the shiplap?
Are you prepared to have to fix the holes in the wall when you are ready to remove the shiplap (because one day it will probably happen!)

Check out how Britt added shiplap to her home office!

Even over the last year the variety of shiplap that has become available is so much greater than when we started a few years ago.

The first room Britt shiplapped was her master bedroom. She had a local carpenter take 1” x 10” pine planks and plane them down until they were 3/8” thick. These planks did not have the routered edges but were just plain flat planks. The pine planks warped and bowed and if Britt didn’t have a headboard covering the majority of the planks she would be taking them down. Also the gaps between the boards is almost 1” in some places and there are no gap at other places. While these boards look okay it wasn’t the authentic feel she was going for.

For Britt’s next project she found another local carpenter that was able to mill out the traditional edges of ship lap. This carpenter started with 1” x 10” boards and planed them down to 3/8” thick but he also added the mitered edges. The mitered edges allowed the planks to slightly overlap and the finish looks like traditional shiplap that you would find in old homes.

Deb added milled shiplap into her studio office and both her bathrooms. For her office space, her carpenter used 1″x 12″ boards and metered the edges. This left a 10″ profile when looking at the shiplap which was a beautiful size for this space. She also had custom shiplap wainscotting made for this room. For that, she had her carpenter mill 1″ x 6″ boards in half and then add a mitered edge. This left a profile of approx 2.5″ which was displayed vertically below the horizontal 10″ shiplap above. It looks amazing!

MDF products are becoming more popular because of their lower price point. This kind of shiplap is now easily accessible and comes primed and sometimes painted which is a nice add on. For a modern design or if you are working with a tighter budget this can be a great option. However, MDF shiplap lacks the character that a real wood product has. MDF is smooth and you are often limited to the width of planks available.

Also another major downside to MDF shiplap is water resistance. We would hesitate putting this product anywhere where there is high traffic or water may be present. This is MDF shiplap is installed in a bathroom and they will need to be very careful about how it is treated.

A new product that we have been able to find in the last year is the traditional look of shiplap in pine and spruce wood. These planks are now available at most hardware stores and come in a 5 1/2″ plank or a 8″ wide and 1/2″ thick. Deb installed these in her bathroom and they look great!

We believe you are limited to these widths available at this time.

    OUr favorite shiplap

Overall we would recommend using a spruce or pine plank over MDF or ripped down plywood if it fits in your budget. Britt chose to custom make shiplap planks so that she didn’t have to remove her baseboards and trim. Britt also loves the wider planks. Wider planks are more traditionally what you would find in an old home. Britt has 10 foot ceilings so the wider planks don’t look as busy as a narrower plank would. The downside is that she relies on 1 person to make all of her shiplap.

Deb’s attic is one of her favourite spaces in her home and she used two sizes of shiplap! Check out more on her attic renovation here

Deb is loving the new spruce 8″ wide planks that are available and they are authentic to her home that was built in 1904.  Although she has multiple widths in her attic, 8″ for the small vertical knee wall and 5″ on the slanted/vaulted ceiling. She loves mixing the sizes as it gives the space a bit more personality!

How To Pick ShipLap for your home

We are both in our forever homes and have no plans of ever moving. For us it is worth spending a bit more and getting a better finished product. However, if you are looking for a quick update to add some character to your home using MDF or ripped down will also do the trick.

Consider the height of your ceilings! Britt has 10 foot ceilings and felt like doing narrow planks would create a look that was too busy. Britt wanted something that had a more classic clean look so she chose to source out wider planks that are 10” wide.

Deb has used a combination of 6” and 10” wide planks in her home and they look awesome because she has a home without an open layout concept. Deb also has narrower planks on her floors which brings us to our next point to consider.

Using shiplap planks that are the same width as your floor planks can look awkward, you need to create a contrast between the width of your flooring vs. the width of your shiplap. Another option would be to install skinny lap! Skinny lap are planks that are approximately 2”-3” wide. While we do not recommend doing a whole room with this wide of planks, using skinny lap on a feature wall can give your room texture and character! Skinny lap also looks great leaving the planks raw wood or painting them a darker colour.

Want more information on skinny lap? Read about it here on The Inspired Hive!

Looking for an alternative to shiplap? Check out this unique modern wood feature wall from Joyfully Growing!

The most important step for having a beautiful end project is to PAINT as you go! Pre paint all of the edges before they go up on the wall! Then once the board is nailed to the wall paint that edge again before the next board goes up. While this seems like a lot of extra work while you are doing it it will save you time when it comes to painting! And have you ever tried to paint a small crack? The paint drips out, you ruin paint brushes trying to cram the paint in and it will never look even.

Awesome tips and important points to consider! Thank you for this post and inspirational pics.

We are happy you enjoyed them! Thanks for leaving us a message

We are so excited to be sharing our favorite Office Decor and ways to create a home office that are both pretty & practical! We both LOVE working from home and so we want to share with you how we have created spaces that inspire us daily and that we truly enjoy working in.

A home office can sometimes turn into a dumping ground for paper work and odd house hold items that we can’t find other places for in our homes. Sometimes a space can also not turn out quite how you want it to the first time around. Over the last year, both of us have renovated our office and craft room areas and LOVE how they have turned out.  Follow along as we share some of our best tips for achieving your ideal functional home office and how we choose the right office decor!

As Interior Designers, we hate to see home office spaces crammed into tiny dark spaces or converting a closet in the basement into a work space. Lets face it, even if you don’t “work” from home there is always still paperwork and computer work to tend to and it usually is one of those chores that you dread and put off doing.

We are going to share some inspiration for how you can think outside the box about home office decor and some basic office organization so that your space can be inspiring and practical in one!

Deb’s office space has had many uses along the way. It  began as designated craft room area for her work and handmade products for B Vintage. She had a permanent space set up for her sewing machine and a large craft table in the middle. As her business changed and she wasn’t making all of her products anymore, her needs for this space changed too. She wanted to have a room that felt more like a studio or  office space that could double as a craftroom for her kiddos too.

Britt’s  office had been a work in progress for 4 years, truthfully since the day they moved in. She is on my 4th desk and  can say that it finally feels like the space that she needed.

Let us share our mistakes with you so that you can create a home office space with practical office decor that you love! You don’t need to have a large designated office to create the space that you need and LOVE too!

STEP #1 – Choosing the Room & NATURAL Light

Choosing the right space in your home can be more difficult then you think. Yes, there may be an area in the house that seems like it should be the office space but ask yourself if it is a space you could see yourself spending time in? Is there ample natural light, or natrual light at all? So many people think have an office in a dark basement is fine but we promise you that after a few weeks you will feel like you are depressed from it. Choose a space with a window and an open feel to it, you will be happy you did in the long run!

Step #2 – The first step is to think about what is the primary use of your space…

You can start by asking yourself these questions:

We both needed a office’s and decor that felt inspiring, a space where we wanted to hang out in, but also space that we could do some paperwork and book work in as well.

Britt had  created a space upstairs for her kiddos last year so she knew she could eliminate that need from her office.

Previously, Britt had built a long table to go in the office so that the kids could sit at the desk as well for doing home work and crafts. Last year, she built them a table to go in their playroom, this table was more functional for them, it kept their play items and crafts separate from things like her bills and such that she didn’t need them accidentally colouring on and cutting up. She felt like the long table was unnecessary and really a waste of space that in the end would just become a handy place to collect “junk.”

Deb on the other hand, renovated her space with her kiddos in mind. Her daughter in particular, needed a space where she could go to make crafts and the jewelry that she enjoyed. She knew she needed enough storage for this as well as a large central table with ample seating. She also knew this space would double as a studio to shoot her Vintage Society Co Shop photos and even as a space to work with flowers and garden supplies at times. she wanted to make sure it didn’t get to full of decor that it wouldn’t work for her needs.

Step #3 – Prioritize & Be Practical with your Home Office decor Needs

The next thing that really changed how we thought about our office was:

Deb knew this space was going to be used for not only an office but also as a studio space. She also knew that there was an old chimney that ran up the wall and she wanted to try and expose that! Exposing the chimney and paring it with ship lap would be the ideal look in this space. There already was a small closet in the room so she purged all unnecessary items and condensed all her needs to fit into that closet.

There was also an unnessacary door that went from this room into her daughters room. It had been put there by the previous owner as the space was used as a rental. She decided to shiplap right overtop of the door, leaving the opening behind the wall incase she ever wanted to open it up again.

Britt previously had a massive armoire in the office, it was blocking part of the window and it was way to big for the room. The other revelation was that the armoire was actually filled with items that she rarely needed access to! She had her taxes and books from 7 years ago stored in the armoire yet she was going to a hall closet weekly to get out her sewing kit… now that makes no sense right?!

So she purged that armoire, separated out what she really needed to have in her office and what could get stored away in a less accessible space. After she purged that armoire, she found that she really didn’t have that much that she needed quick access to on a daily basis. She still wanted to have her printer close by and office basics like pens, pencils, scissors, and her camera stuff but she didn’t need like old college course books or her old taxes occupying this prime real estate.

The key to organization we have come to realize over the years is that you need to think about areas of your home being more valuable for some items over others! If you put items closer to where they are needed that it is easier to maintain a clean and organized home.

Britt measured the ideal size of a cabinet that she was looking for and thought about how she would need to store these items. The armoire had smaller drawers  with a massive open space at the top and that wasn’t the type of organizing that she really needed.

Deb downsized all the furniture in this space including the library cabinet she had just painted a month earlier. She kept enough storage for her printer and other required items like pens, pencils and printer paper. She hung a beautiful salvaged stain glass window insert above the cabinet that added an element of elegance to the room.

Britt was so lucky to find this primitive cabinet that had simple shelves that could be adjustable if she wanted and it had no floor in it so she could run an extension cord out the bottom for plugging in her printer. This cabinet was also perfect because the inside of the cabinet was pretty so that meant it doubled as storage and a piece of home decor.

The other need that both of us wanted to achieve with our office space’s and studios was having a space to display some of our Vintage Society Co. items that people come over to look at. Vintage Society doesn’t have an actual store front, so we offer local pick up from our homes. We wanted some of the more popular items to be more accessible for when those clients come over.

Deb exposed the chimney back in her room to find that it had been covered in beautiful shabby chic wallpaper at one point. Using a hand held jack hammer, she chilled back a lot of the concrete to find beautiful brick underneath. She sprayed the outside with a poly to seal the bricks and stop debris from falling. It turned out to be the perfect contrast in this space.

Deb had brought coat racks back with her from France last summer and also had this pretty salvaged hook from New York! She painted these the same colour she painted the floors in this room.  Hanging it in this space allows her to change up the decor seasonally with out making marks on the walls!

Britt had this vintage set of hooks upstairs for her boys but she have other plans for that space so she brought the hooks down to her office and the raw wood and the aged metal is the perfect contrast against the ship lap.

Again, allowing your decor to have 2 functions – 1. Decor 2. Storage.  Hooks let us hang things like the market baskets that we carry in our Vintage Society shop, but these items are also pretty and look displayed.

,Make sure the decor you add to your space is inspiring to you in some way. Just because that Ikea desk is affordable, doesn’t mean you are going to love how it feels in a room. Invest in one or two items that you love to make the space feel more like YOU!

Britt loved her raw wood antique desk and Deb found a salvaged European fold out desk that fit under her chandeliers perfectly. Both tables are from the girls fav store Uniquities!

For both of us, the needs of this home office didn’t require a traditional desk with drawers and a rolling chair. I kept my Vintage French café chair in here and every time I walk by this office I WANT TO COME IN! In fact, I am currently writing this post from this very spot! And that is how Deb and I love to create spaces in our homes! The spaces need to be functional but they also needs to inspire you above anything else so that you use the space for its intended purpose.

Both of us painted our floors in these spaces and we LOVE it! Head to our post on painted floors to get step by step tutorial on how we achieved this look and how they are holding up !

Step #4 – Finding the Perfect Location

Okay so what if you don’t have a bright office space? First, ask yourself where do you gravitate towards to work on your business stuff? Your bedroom, kitchen island, kitchen table? If you don’t have room for an actual desk near one of these spaces then can you put together a portable office? Find a pretty crate to put some of your essentials in, like a couple pens, paper and your laptop and then you can pull it out when you need to work and tuck it away maybe in your bedroom closet of broom closet when its not in need.

Step #5 – Choosing the right office decor

We have both been starting to add ship lap throughout ours home’s and wanted to have a ship lap wall’s that we could take pictures of our Vintage Society stock against so we knew we wanted to ship lap the entire room’s as opposed to just a feature wall.

Deb even went one step further by having custom shiplap wainscotting made. To see exactly how this was done, head to our post ALL about shiplap!

Shiplapping was the biggest investment both of us made in these room and we love how it gave this room texture but it also helped cut down on the echo in this small but tall room. The shiplap also gives us more opportunities for hanging things around the room without needing to patch walls if we want to take it down.

Step #6 – How to tie everything together in your Home Office

Now you have all of these ideas and tips BUT how do you actually bring it to life?

    1. Start small – purge out your office and minimize where you can.

    2. Rethink your office desk and make this the focal point of your space.

    3. Give it a facelift – paint, shiplap, wallpaper! Add a pretty element.

    4. Try a different layout –  trial and error is key.

    5. Get creative with hiding cords! We all need cords in our office, but things like large market baskets and crates can hide some of the power bars and computer hubs.

Tip #7. Give yourself some grace – Rome wasn’t built over night

So you can’t expect spaces to turn out perfect the first time either. The key to creating spaces is to be patient and be willing to adjust when things aren’t exactly as you had hoped the first time. Or be willing to hire a professional if you would like it done right the first time! We offer Interior Design consults and can even do video messaging to consult on layout and colour schemes!

Top 5 Ways to Use Rose Petals

Roses are timeless flowers that everyone is familiar with. Whether you grow them in your garden, get them as a bouquet from your loved one or see wild roses growing along the trees in summer- we all smile and hopefully slow down to take the time to smell their sweet scent.

Have you ever thought to use them beyond decor or for their visual beauty? Jessica is sharing her top 5 ways to use or repurpose those gorgeous rose petals instead of throwing them in the compost!

Guest written by Jessica, from Prairie Soap Shack.

Jessica  is a certified herbalist, mom, nurse & owner of Prairie Soap Shack. She handmakes artisan soap & body products with all-natural & wildcrafted ingredients from the Alberta Prairies. You can find her on her website or on Instagram

All the Uses for Rose Petals

Did you know rose petals are edible? It’s best to use your own homegrown roses to know if any chemical was used on them. They pack a strong punch, so less is more if you’re going to try a bite! But you can add them to muffins or cakes, or top for decoration if you’d like an extra floral touch to your baking. They are full of nutrients including vitamins A & C. So be adventurous and add some different flavor in your kitchen!

It’s easy to make your own rose water. You can use either fresh or dried rose petals, place ~1 cup into ~4 cups water in a saucepan. Bring to boil and simmer for about 30 min. Strain the petals out with a fine mesh strainer and you have rose water! This is a strong infusion and the colour may come out quite dark.

There are endless uses for rose water. First, its culinary uses as its been used for centuries. Rose water can be added for flavouring in cooking or baking. Or my favourite idea is to freeze into ice cubes and use in your lemonade, punch or cocktail at your next party! I also used it this week to add some flavouring into my fermented kombucha.

Next, rose water in beauty products is AMAZING! It is so beneficial for your body with all its skin loving properties. Rose water is hydrating, balancing, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory & helps soften fine lines and wrinkles.

You can use the rose water as a face toner, applying with cotton balls after cleansing your face or misting directly onto your skin. The roses have mild astringent properties, so it helps tighten pores and gently tone your complexion. It’s anti-inflammatory which helps reduce redness and helps acne.

You can also use the rose water as a room spritzer to freshen the air. Optional to add a few drops of essential oils like geranium, rose or lavender. These aromatherapy benefits can help uplift your mood.

Simply adding a few rose petals to some epsom salts & sea salts will have you feeling like you’re a Greek goddess. Rose petals in a bath are luxury & self-care at its finest. Soaking in the magnesium rich salts and having rose petals around you promotes relaxation & calmness. The roses also help soothe irritated skin, brighten your complexion & tighten your pores for a smooth appearance.

Try mixing in pink Himalayan salts for the colour variety. Soak for at least 20 min for full benefits. Be sure to scoop out the rose petals before draining to avoid clogging!

A fresh flower and herb facial steam is an effective way to gently coax out impurities while calming the mind & uplifting the spirit! You can use rose petals and any other in season flower or herb such as lavender, chamomile or mint. Lilac comes to mind as a super fragrant flower in bloom.

Steps: Fill a bowl on the kitchen table with the flowers & herbs and optional to use a couple drops of essential oils such as skin-loving lavender. Boil your kettle and pour boiled water over the flowers. Sit down with the bowl in front of you and cover your head with a large towel, creating a kind of tent above the bowl. Check the steam is not too hot, and once comfortable, let the scented vapours make their way to your face. Be careful not to let the steam get too hot against your skin. Close your eyes and relax, steaming for 10 minutes. This would be a great time to meditate, listen to soothing music or just deep breath.

The benefits of using steam to promote healthy skin have been used for centuries. The gentle warmth and humidity encourage detoxification. Steaming helps promote the release of toxins held in the skin and helps the pores open and breath. This helps reduce redness, softens blackheads, releases dirt & impurities, moisturizes the skin & evens out skin tone. This leaves you rejuvenated, with soft & glowing skin!

You can infuse rose petals into vinegar (white or apple cider) to create a brilliant multipurpose cleaner, laundry rinse aid, or even a clarifying hair rinse! You simply take the rose petals, fresh or dried, about 1 cup and place into glass mason jar. Fill to the top with vinegar and let infuse for 1-2 weeks. Use a piece of wax paper under the metal lid as the vinegar will corrode the lid. Shake every now and again while infusing. To strain, use a fine mesh strainer and you have a gorgeous pink, sweet smelling vinegar!

If the smell is still too strong for your liking, you can add a few drops of essential oils to enhance the scent but also contribute to cleaning benefits. It will keep for at least a year! To use as a multipurpose cleaner, dilute into water to a ratio of 1:4 and use in a spray bottle. Can be used on most surfaces, but avoid granite, stone or marble.

To use as a laundry rinse aid, use undiluted. It helps soften clothes, deodorize & reduce scum in your machine.

To use as a hair rinse, dilute with water to a ratio of 1:10. Apply after shampooing & conditioning, apply the mixture over your hair evenly, working into your scalp. Let it sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing out. Be careful to avoid the eyes! Vinegar hair rinses, commonly made with apple cider vinegar, are known to improve scalp health, strengthen hair, enhance shine, balance hair pH, reduces frizz, and promote hair growth. Jessica had a friend who had extremely oily hair out of nowhere, likely from product build up. After many salon treatments and money spent- the home method of apple cider vinegar rinses is what fixed her hair and restored it to its natural healthy state.

Rose infused vinegar can also be used for cooling & soothing uses such as itching, sun burn, bug bites and hives.

You can also use rose infused vinegar in your favourite vinaigrette recipe!

Time to get adventurous and make yourself a luxurious rose petal sugar scrub! This DIY scrub will get your skin glowing and feeling silky and smooth. Sugar scrubs polish away dull flakiness and increase blood flow to the surface of the skin. Besides this scrub feeling lovely, you’ll also feel special making something with your rose petals. Enjoy this recipe!

Small handful of fresh rose petals
    1⁄2 cup granulated sugar
2-3 tbsp sunflower or other light oil
3 drops essential oil (such a sweet orange, lavender, geranium)

    • Place the rose petals and sugar in the bowl of a small food processor. Blend until an even texture and colour is achieved. Spread the now-coloured sugar in a single layer over a sheet of wax paper and allow it to air dry for 1-2 days.

    • Place the dried rose sugar in a small mixing bowl. Add the oil, 1 tbsp at a time, stirring well after each addition. Continue adding oil until you’ve reached a consistency that you like. Add 3 drops of essential oil for scent. Stir well.

    • Use over dry spots and other areas of your body needing exfoliation (I love it over my legs), or you can use it as a hand scrub after washing your hands. Rinse well with warm water. Be careful if using in the shower or tub, since the oil may make the floor slippery.

    As lovely as a rose

I hope you’re feeling inspired to make some creative things with your rose petals! My favourite rose is the Wild Alberta Rose. I look forward every summer to foraging a few wild roses and later on the rose hips to make things with! Working with plants and nature gives a person a sense of calmness and accomplishment. Find a way each day to de-stress by connecting with nature.

Baby it’s cold outside… and we couldn’t be happier! The cold temps mean that the most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner. Christmas truly is a special time of year and we both love to decorate for this season, this year was no exception! So please sit back and enjoy our Vintage Society Co. Farmhouse Christmas Tour!

Both Britt and Deb love to decorate with natural, real elements for the season. We share a very similar décor recipe this time of year with a few simple ingredients to make our homes shine for the holiday season. Adding any of these elements into your home will give it just a tiny bit more sparkle and allow it to have just the right amount of festive vibes!

Neither one of us likes to go overboard or all out for the holiday’s but instead prefer to add realistic items that would be used in our homes for décor!

Elements that make a Farmhouse Christmas

The more twinkle the better! Twinkle lights add an element of sparkle and glow to every home this time of year. Layering them with multiple strands is even better! There doesn’t really need to be a rhyme or reason to how you add your lights, just add them to any space and they will look perfect! Both Britt and Deb like to coil them and unravel them into a pretty circular shape on tables and around trees. The best part is they are a LED bulb, so they never heat up or act as a fire hazard! Our absolutely favourite copper twinkle lights can be found in our Shop in all different sizes and as both plug in or battery operated. There are even solar set options that can be used in the winter as Christmas lights or the summer as fairy lights in the garden.

It’s not secret we have a small obsession with linen! We both love it so much and choose to use it throughout our houses! This season, we were able to find a beautiful ticking, striped red fabric that was perfect for the Christmas season. It looks pretty hanging on a hook or in a basket, it would even look gorgeous at the base of a simple Christmas tree like Deb did here! We both have vintage linens from France as well that we use throughout our homes that give a simple touch of holiday!

Now we know not everyone has a Christmas tree farm out their back doors like Britt does, but most of us are able to get our hands on a real tree for the season…. And NOTHING beats a real tree! The way it smells, the way it looks… there is something so perfect for the holiday season about a real tree! Plus, now with the invention of the twinkle lights we talked about before, you don’t have the safety hazards that used to come along with real trees. We both use all different sizes of trees throughout our homes and put together a Blog post on how to care for them so they last as long as possible.

Nothing beats the simplicity of brass bells. Scatter them on a table or hang them from a light! Bells are so authentically ‘Farmhouse Christmas’ and add a bit of bling to any space!

Christmas evergreens make a home truly feel ready for the season. Adding cedar to a mantle or a staircase gives it the most elegant feel. Britt worked with Hemlock this year and Deb added Juniper bows to her mantle which had the most amazing scent you can imagine! Most years the girls do evergreen pots in front of their homes but we both went a bit simpler this year with trees.

Last year, Deb did cedar garland all the way around her front deck! There are more tips on making your greenery last longer on our Holiday Home Decorators Tips blog post.

Wrapping doesn’t need to be all Santa’s and reindeer! Sometimes, simple craft paper or even scrap linens work so well for wrapping! Bakers twine, burlap string or hand dyed ribbons are perfect to use when gift-wrapping! Topping off the gift with a bell, pinecone or dried orange also give a beautiful finish to the present in replace of a bow.

Christmas décor can bring so many outdoor elements inside! Both Britt and Deb love to use pinecones and birch branches. Deb simply tied a stack with a linen ribbon this year and had them as her centrepiece. Mountain Ash berries are also another lovely, natural pop of colour to any space! They dry well and add a bit of texture to the area you are decorating!

Nothing says Farmhouse Christmas more than plaid! The best part is it comes in so many different designs and styles that you can change it up each year! A simple blanket throw on a sofa or chair can be all a space needs.

Hanging a scarf off the back of a chair or in a basket can be the perfect touch as well. Deb has decided to mix all her plaids this year to give a pretty look throughout the house. She even used a plaid scarf on the hanging basket on her front door!

Candles set the mood in any setting! These thin tapered candles are so pretty for a table centrepiece or using a scented candle like our Antique Candle Co line that we sell in the Shop will add to the ambience in any setting! Candles are one of our favorite parts of the Christmas season!

Deb loves to decorate her main tree with only antique ornaments! Over the years she has collected them and now has enough to decorate a 9’ tree! Each one is unique and beautiful! There is something about the patina on these gorgeous ornaments that is so special at Christmas time!

    Happy Holidays

Any of these elements on their own are wonderful, but when you mix them all together it creates something special! We hope you have enjoyed our Vintage Society Farmhouse Christmas tour and would love to hear what you use to decorate your home with. Do you have a favorite item you collect? What makes your home feel like Christmas?  Let us know by sending us an email or replying in the comments below! Merry Christmas sweet friends!

The Hunt for French Country Decor in Provence

To say that our trip to France was a lifelong dream trip
is an understatement!  This was a bucket list checker for sure! As long as the two of us have known each other, we have shared a love for French country décor and antiques! We have joked about going to France to shop the markets ourselves. When the opportunity came up to do a trip with the talented Maria, Dreamy Whites Lifestyle and Tracy, French Larkspur
we were all over it! We had such an amazing adventure and learned so much along the way so we wanted to share some of that with you.

We had planned this trip almost a year in advance and had been saving and preparing for months! Not only were we excited about heading over for the shopping, but we were also SO excited about the pictures and photoshoots that we were going to take while we were there!! The tour group was very small consisting of only four people. All of us were Canadian so that was fun! Molly and Marji were a mother daughter duo and a total bundle of fun! We laughed until we cried multiple times on the trip! Lifelong friendships were made with all the ladies for sure!!

    Shopping decor in Provence

The week began in Apt, our home base for the week. We had a lovely apartment that we were staying in with the most beautiful French Country décor. The owner of the hotel  also owns a broconte shop in a neighbouring village, so our room was chalk full of the types of décor pieces we were on the hunt for! Even the laundry room was jaw dropping! We spent almost every dinner in the garden with the ladies eating our favourite cheeses, yummy heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and baguette.

    Off to the Markets

Our first morning, we headed to Lourmarin, to hit the largest food market in the area. In France, they are all about the market shopping instead of going to the grocery store. The streets of the village were lined with vendors of all kinds, fresh fruit, yummy meats and cheeses, beautiful linens and handmade soaps could all be found there.

After a lovely lunch at a local restaurant , we headed to the neighbouring town of Bonnieux, to shop at our first true brocante shop!  There were so many amazing items there and a chandelier that had all of us trying to figure out how we could ship it home! We picked up some of our amazing French soap that we just listed in the Shop at this market.  French Soap on a Rope and handmade Marseille Block Soap.

French Country Decor at the Flea Markets

The second day, we headed to our first flea market in Villeneuve-Les-Avignon! We both bolted to the shops like a pair of kids to a candy shop!! Deb loved this market because she found an antique French wire chandelier that she had hoped to find! This was something she had told her husband years before that she wanted to get for her house someday so that was a great bucket list item checked off!

There was also so much beautiful ironstone and some cute café chairs that both girls picked up! Britt got a gorgeous tien bowl there and we found our French canning jars that will soon be listed in the Shop there as well.

The next morning, we were back at it again, this time it was off to the biggest market of the week in Carpentras! Britt loved this market as she found the beautiful white café chairs that she had on her list. We found a few more chandeliers, antique coat racks and French pitchers! French Country Décor HEAVEN!

Some of these items now listed in the Shop. It was so much fun to barter with the vendors. Even with the language barrier, it was still a great memory! We would use a pen and paper if the communication got really difficult, but overall it worked out just fine! The French were extremely pleasant and willing to try to communicate with us even with the small amount of French language that we knew.

We stuffed all our finds and ourselves into the van and headed on to L’Isle sur la Sorgues for another market that was going on! This village had the most beautiful brocante shops that we visited!

Britt found her light fixture here and Deb found a washboard she is using for her bath tub caddy as well as the antique dough bowl. Check out the Vintage items available  in the Shop. There was also the most beautiful river in this village and we ate lunch while listening to live French music on the waterfront.

    Enjoying the French Country Side

On Monday we headed to Oppéde Le Vieux ! This village was one of the prettiest that we saw. It is extremely small and very remote. In fact we had to park down below on the mountain and walk up from below.

The restaurant there had unbelievably good food with the most stunning setting! After we finished eating, we headed up to the highest point of the village where the church is! The photos taken at this village were some of our favourites.

The next morning we were off to yet another beautiful hillside village called Ménerbes. It had some of the most gorgeous cobble stone streets and was a favorite for both of us! All of these towns were unique in their own way. This town even had a truffle restaurant at the very highest lookout point.

One thing that so many of the villages had in common, was the stunning cobble stone streets, stone houses with coloured shutters and amazing vegetation climbing the buildings!

There were so many places we stopped to take pictures at! Everywhere you looked the setting was perfect, we may have even borrowed a few private patio’s to use for shots of our product!

On our way back to the hotel that day, we made an unscheduled stop at the university town of Lacoste.

This was one of our favourites stops of the whole trip! The museum was open and we were able to see what the inside of a home would have looked like in the 18th century. It was amazing to see how they lived and that the livestock lived with them in the home.

Gordes was the village the following day! It was built up the side of a mountain and was SO beautiful!

We ate the local fresh fruits and meats while listening to live music at the market. It was such a lovely town and had the best price for the linen clothing by far.

You can check out some of the gorgeous linens our sweet friend Maria, Dreamy Whites Lifestyle brought back for her shop here!!

Lavender Improves Sleep and is a Natural Remedy for Pain

We also made our way to a lavender distillery this day as well. There were so many different varieties of lavender at the shop, each having its own unique scent. The grosse lavender is the most fragrant so we purchased some to bring back to make items for the shop with! It smells so good!

The debate is still on about what we should make with the lavender so feel free to send us any suggestions!

We sent all of our items back with a shipping company so in the evening we all packed boxes and wrapped all of our breakables as well as we could! It was like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, trying to get everything to fit in the boxes. Almost all of our items, except 1 large tien bowl and a small pot, arrived back in excellent condition.

Our final day, we went to the village of Sault in the high alpines of Provence. There were so many amazing lavender shops in this village.  Maria bought 75 lbs of lavender petals for items in her shop.

We stopped at a few lavender fields on our way back from this village! In the end, we decided to do an unscheduled photo shoot at a lavender field in Saignon that evening. The weather was 108 F or 38 C so it was just too hot to be outside taking pictures in the afternoon.

The next morning, we were heading back to Canada and our families. It was truly the most amazing trip filled with all the things we love! Antiques, photography, beautiful scenery, amazing food and friends we will have forever! We hope you enjoyed our lil’ recap of the trip and our hunt for French Country Décor! Make sure to  check out the new Shop items!

We would love to hear from you if you have any questions for us about the décor we picked up in the French countryside! Just send us an email or write below in the comments.

One of our favorite pieces of furniture has to be the DINNING TABLE! A great farmhouse dining table can completely change the vibes of your home. Britt and Deb have both had multiple styles of dining tables in their homes, so we thought it would be fun to round up some of our favorites to share with you all.

    20 Famhouse Dining Tables

The Farmhouse Style has become so diverse that it allows you to incorporate many different shapes and styles into your home. It’s fun to see how all of these designs can still fit within the Farmhouse style.

    Kristin Glandon @kristin_kgdesigns

Before you choose a style of table, it is essential to consider the size of the space you have for your table. Maintaining walking space and general flow within the room is necessary. On the other hand, when you have ample dining space with perhaps high ceilings having a larger table is important. Having a larger dining table will be essential so that the table can “hold its own” and not look small and unproportioned.

    Caroline – @c.b._designs

Within the Farmhouse Style, you can find tables with both cleaner lines, and tables with ornate leg designs can still look good with this style as well!

    Vintage Farmhouse Dining Tables

When you lean more towards a more minimalist style home, having a simpler design can better suit your space. Britt found her Early American Potting Table at an antique store. She actually passed by the table multiple times over two years and always told herself, “next time, if it’s still there, I’ll get it.” Finally, one day she committed to getting the table. The table is quite narrow and was lower than a traditional dining table.

However, when you look at Britt’s dining space, there is not a tone of room width-wise, and previous tables always seemed to compete with her large kitchen island. Did you know Britt’s dinning table is only 27.5″ wide!

    Resa – @thefarmhouse31

There can always be that hesitation about using a vintage piece for surfaces where you will be eating. Britt cleaned up the top of the table and applied multiple coats of matte polyurethane. She loves that it doesn’t matter if people ding or dent the table because it just adds to the table’s character. To combat the table’s height issue, Britt added some castors on the table legs to increase the height by 2,” and the table was now perfect!

    Rustic Farmhouse Dining Table

When you have a larger dining space having a table with a more significant base is a great option! The classic farmhouse cross is always a great choice. Or table legs with a bigger girth are also an option we look at when choosing a table.

Check out some examples of Farmhouse Dining Tables we love with a broader base.

    Round Farmhouse Dining Table

Round Tables?? While round farmhouse dining tables are not the first choice we turn to when designing a space, they can be a great option in limited space areas. Round Farmhouse Tables prevent chopping up spaces or restricting walking paths by creating a more continuous flow.

A fun Farmhouse option for a round table is to place a salvaged spool on a table base! Or mix a lighter tabletop colour on a darker base to add some visual interest.

    Ali – @alimarie.ssh

Never be afraid to throw a coat of paint on a table! If you are on a tight budget picking up a garage sale table and painting it white can be a quick yet beautiful option!

    DIY Table Ideas

The Perfect Farmhouse Dining Table is the combination of a great base and a beautiful tabletop! Often we find a table that we either love the top or the base but not both. You have two options … keep searching or look into having a table custom made. We have both have had multiple tables made either by DIYing them or having local carpenters help us bring our vision to life. Don’t settle on a table because you love the legs but not the top!

Sawhorse tables look so unique. However, the one thing to watch with this style of table is that it makes dining with your guests more informal. The chairs have to be separated by the table bases creating distance between your guests.

Britt has even taken a set of metal table legs and placed a salvaged vintage door on top to make a patio table! The options are endless when it comes to creating tables to enjoy with your family!

This classic farmhouse cross dining table is one that Deb designed and built with a local carpenter. Britt bought the table from Deb before the two were business partners, and then Britt sold the table to a friend! When you stick with a classic style table, they never go out of style!

Loving a dining table can set the mood for that entire space. When you love the dining table, you are more likely to dine at it as a family more frequently. Britt and Deb truly believe the dining table is meant to be shared with your family and to bring the people you love together at the end of the day!
