Baby it’s cold outside… and we couldn’t be happier! The cold temps mean that the most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner. Christmas truly is a special time of year and we both love to decorate for this season, this year was no exception! So please sit back and enjoy our Vintage Society Co. Farmhouse Christmas Tour!

Both Britt and Deb love to decorate with natural, real elements for the season. We share a very similar décor recipe this time of year with a few simple ingredients to make our homes shine for the holiday season. Adding any of these elements into your home will give it just a tiny bit more sparkle and allow it to have just the right amount of festive vibes!

Neither one of us likes to go overboard or all out for the holiday’s but instead prefer to add realistic items that would be used in our homes for décor!

Elements that make a Farmhouse Christmas

The more twinkle the better! Twinkle lights add an element of sparkle and glow to every home this time of year. Layering them with multiple strands is even better! There doesn’t really need to be a rhyme or reason to how you add your lights, just add them to any space and they will look perfect! Both Britt and Deb like to coil them and unravel them into a pretty circular shape on tables and around trees. The best part is they are a LED bulb, so they never heat up or act as a fire hazard! Our absolutely favourite copper twinkle lights can be found in our Shop in all different sizes and as both plug in or battery operated. There are even solar set options that can be used in the winter as Christmas lights or the summer as fairy lights in the garden.

It’s not secret we have a small obsession with linen! We both love it so much and choose to use it throughout our houses! This season, we were able to find a beautiful ticking, striped red fabric that was perfect for the Christmas season. It looks pretty hanging on a hook or in a basket, it would even look gorgeous at the base of a simple Christmas tree like Deb did here! We both have vintage linens from France as well that we use throughout our homes that give a simple touch of holiday!

Now we know not everyone has a Christmas tree farm out their back doors like Britt does, but most of us are able to get our hands on a real tree for the season…. And NOTHING beats a real tree! The way it smells, the way it looks… there is something so perfect for the holiday season about a real tree! Plus, now with the invention of the twinkle lights we talked about before, you don’t have the safety hazards that used to come along with real trees. We both use all different sizes of trees throughout our homes and put together a Blog post on how to care for them so they last as long as possible.

Nothing beats the simplicity of brass bells. Scatter them on a table or hang them from a light! Bells are so authentically ‘Farmhouse Christmas’ and add a bit of bling to any space!

Christmas evergreens make a home truly feel ready for the season. Adding cedar to a mantle or a staircase gives it the most elegant feel. Britt worked with Hemlock this year and Deb added Juniper bows to her mantle which had the most amazing scent you can imagine! Most years the girls do evergreen pots in front of their homes but we both went a bit simpler this year with trees.

Last year, Deb did cedar garland all the way around her front deck! There are more tips on making your greenery last longer on our Holiday Home Decorators Tips blog post.

Wrapping doesn’t need to be all Santa’s and reindeer! Sometimes, simple craft paper or even scrap linens work so well for wrapping! Bakers twine, burlap string or hand dyed ribbons are perfect to use when gift-wrapping! Topping off the gift with a bell, pinecone or dried orange also give a beautiful finish to the present in replace of a bow.

Christmas décor can bring so many outdoor elements inside! Both Britt and Deb love to use pinecones and birch branches. Deb simply tied a stack with a linen ribbon this year and had them as her centrepiece. Mountain Ash berries are also another lovely, natural pop of colour to any space! They dry well and add a bit of texture to the area you are decorating!

Nothing says Farmhouse Christmas more than plaid! The best part is it comes in so many different designs and styles that you can change it up each year! A simple blanket throw on a sofa or chair can be all a space needs.

Hanging a scarf off the back of a chair or in a basket can be the perfect touch as well. Deb has decided to mix all her plaids this year to give a pretty look throughout the house. She even used a plaid scarf on the hanging basket on her front door!

Candles set the mood in any setting! These thin tapered candles are so pretty for a table centrepiece or using a scented candle like our Antique Candle Co line that we sell in the Shop will add to the ambience in any setting! Candles are one of our favorite parts of the Christmas season!

Deb loves to decorate her main tree with only antique ornaments! Over the years she has collected them and now has enough to decorate a 9’ tree! Each one is unique and beautiful! There is something about the patina on these gorgeous ornaments that is so special at Christmas time!

Happy Holidays

Any of these elements on their own are wonderful, but when you mix them all together it creates something special! We hope you have enjoyed our Vintage Society Farmhouse Christmas tour and would love to hear what you use to decorate your home with. Do you have a favorite item you collect?
