We are all about the holidays…the home decor, the food, time with family! Especially as Fall and Winter Roll around we spend a lot of time hosting family gatherings and so we wanted to share a couple Pumpkin recipes that we love to share with our families and friends!

So naturally when we thought about sharing our favourite pumpkin recipes we thought let’s turn this into a baking challenge! Deb has a delicious Pumpkin Pie Recipe that she loves to make! Whereas, Britt is a big cookie fan and has come up with a soft Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. Let’s take a look at the recipes and how the challenge went down!

    Watch our Baking Challenge Below

    Perfect Pumpkin Pie Recipe

    Ingredients:

    Directions:

    Tips for Pumpkin Pies

To prevent getting a soggy pie crust bottom sprinkle a bit of white sugar on the pie crust before adding your filling!

Deb also used fresh pumpkin this time and the pie was perfectly moist!

    PUMPKIN RECIPE CHALLENGE

Britt & Deb thought it would be fun to do a baking day and see how each others pumpkin recipes taste.

We decided to bake a pumpkin so that we could use real pumpkin over canned. To bake a fresh pumpkin you simply cut the pumpkin in half. Then, place the pumpkin in a pan, skin side up and cover with tin foil. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the pumpkin is soft. The pumpkin flesh will easily scoop away from the skin and can be added to any recipe!

It was so fun to bake together…this was a first in our partnership! Deb loves baking recipes that are quick and delicious! And this pumpkin pie recipe is exactly that! Deb’s pie was definitely quicker to whip up than the cookies!

Cookies are one of Britt’s family favourites … in fact after the baking challenge the cookies were gone that evening! While pumpkin is not one of Britt’s favourite flavours these cookies are so soft and chewy and the pumpkin is not overwhelming!

Click HERE for Britt’s Soft Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe!

Did you know all of these images were edited with our collection of Fall Lightroom presets! You can grab them in the SHOP!

Both recipes turned out so good and would be the perfect addition to any gatherings or events this Fall or Winter!

We would love to know if you try any of these recipes!! Leave us a comment below with what recipe you would try first!

    Farmhouse Kitchen hutch

It’s always difficult finding the exact fit and piece of furniture you want for a space. Over the years, I’ve hunted long and hard to find the perfect piece to fit in my dining room. I was on the hunt for something that wasn’t too modern, too ornate or nothing that was to art deco. Like a scavenger hunt, I was looking for the perfect farmhouse kitchen hutch. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided I’d build it myself. Take a look below and how I came to build the perfect farmhouse kitchen hutch.

When we moved in to our 1903 home seven years ago,  there was a beautiful hutch in our dining room and I loved it.  It actually belong to my grandmother so it was quite the heirloom piece. Overtime, as my design style changed and  developed. I began to not enjoy it as much as I did to begin with. It had too many details and decorative elements for what I was looking for. All I wanted, was something very simple and open that I could display some of my favourite finds.

The Hunt for the perct Farmhouse kitchen Hutch

I scoured antique shops, garage sales and flea markets for a couple years, holding out for the perfect piece. I first cam upon the base of my hutch. It was in a small town antique shop and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it! The best part was, it was only $99 and in great shape! The colour was a mint green but I had to change it when I found the top half. The base was stored in my garage for about 5 months while hunting for a top!

The upper half of my cabinet was finally found through a friend who is an antique picker for $120. I had sent out feelers to many dealers I have met over the years to keep their eyes peeled for a top that would fit the height and width I would need. The top came out of an old farmhouse as it had been the cabinets in the kitchen! I loved how authentic it felt and it was the perfect fit!

Now I just needed to make some minor changes! Between the base and the upper, I added a section to make it feel like they were meant to be a solid piece! I removed the ornate molding on the top of the upper because it  just wasn’t my style anymore.  Using some salvaged trim from a friend who deals European antiques, I added a new molding to the top where the old trim used to be. The inserts of the cabinet doors were taken out. I did this so I could show off my beautiful collections inside the cabinet, somewhat like an open shelving concept.  Next, I simply painted it my favourite oxford white colour and changed out the hardware!

The hutch turned out so beautiful! I love how simple and how TALL it is in my dining room! The best part it, it only cost me $220, a little paint and some elbow grease!

Now, there were a few things to consider when looking for or building the perfect kitchen hutch. Let’s take a look at what those are.

    The Height

Measure your room and eyeball where you think the top of the piece should be that is the most aesthetically pleasing.  Also consider all the other pieces of furniture you have in the space. Your kitchen or dining room table, the chair height, any other hutches or armours you may have in the room. If you are building a piece from scratch, you will then be able to customize it to the height you would prefer. If you’re sourcing or hunting for a piece like I did, now you have a starting point to look for your piece’s of furniture. Now, if you will be adding any additional height when you customize your piece together,  you must also consider that in these measurements.

This is a component that I didn’t take into consideration and had to make adjustments for when we put the pieces together. Originally, I wanted an 18 inches section added to my hutch. However, after adding the two sections together it would’ve made the piece just too tall. So we had to adjust it to 12”

Get the look! Antique Belgian Beer Bottles and Linen Towels are in the shop!

It was important to find something that fits my space well and had enough height for my 10 foot ceilings. There is a picture rail  in my home and I need to keep the cabinet below that but I wanted an extra tall base so that it could be seen over top of the  dining room table.

    The Width

Similar to measuring the height of the space, we also want to measure the width of the wall that you will have the piece on. Consider if you want to hutch centred in the wall or offset. Will you have artwork beside it perhaps, or even additional seating?

I didn’t want the kitchen hutch to take up too much of the wall. This space also needed something not too large, as I wanted to be able to put additional seating beside the hutch or a featured piece of artwork.

Find this garden hat and many other unique decor items in my online Shop

    The Depth

Just like the height and width of your piece, the depth is something to consider. Do you want something that’s wide enough that you can use to lay out a morning brunch or dinner for family? Or perhaps you want something narrow that doesn’t take up much space in the room.

For me, the depth was something very important, I didn’t want something that was too wide or that would protrude into the space at all. The bay window in this room is not centred so the narrowness of the piece makes it feel more proportioned in the room now.

    The Style

Another thing to consider is the look and style of the piece. Are you wanting something that looks very simple and minimal? Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit more ornate? Maybe even something that has an art deco feel to it. If you are building this piece from scratch, adding any details can sometimes be tricky. However nowadays, you can buy wood work premade at most hardware stores. Much simpler than having to hand chisel ornate moldings yourself.  You can also find some vintage corbels or salvage architectural pieces, like I did.

I wanted my peace to be quite simple and minimalistic. The idea behind it was that it would more than anything showcase the pieces on the shelves as a post to the kitchen hutch being the showcase. I looked for two pieces that would fit together in the depth and height but also in the style. My hutch is extremely minimal and I took the cabinet inserts out of the doors so that it’s now got an open shelving concept feel. Changing the hardware also made a difference!  I custom ordered from a supplier off Etsy.

Purchase the linen towel in my Shop

    The Color

Whether you’re building a piece from scratch or you’re purchasing one from Wayfair or HomeSense, it’s important to make sure that the color will fit the space. Consider if  you will be using your hutch as a buffet? It’s a good idea to have a dark surface on the top or at least a coat of polyurethane to protect the surface and paint color. A darker painted colour or wood surface will dictate more attention in the room than one that is painted white or a lighter neutral colour. If you do choose to go with bright paint or colour, it will also stand out more in the space than a lighter coloured hutch would. Colour and style really do have huge impact on the entire space your hutch will be in.

My vision behind this hutch was to have it showcase my antique collections  rather then to be the showpiece itself. I chose to paint it a very neutral colour, in fact it’s the same colour as my walls. This way everything inside stand’s out more than the piece itself. Almost like a paint canvas would.

    Patience makes perfect

It may have taken me a few months, in fact over a year to find the perfect vintage pieces to fit together for this hutch, but I finally checked off all the boxes in all the above categories. The height and simplicity of the piece were the most important elements for me. Another aspect that weighed heavily for me, was that it needed to in fact be vintage and have some history to it.  In the end, I’m so happy with how this piece turned out.

This is the second furniture piece that I have constructed using multiple vintage items as I also converted an antique library cabinet and an old washstand! Take a look at that post here.

I hope that you are found this useful in deciding what you want for the perfect kitchen hutch. Don’t worry if it takes a while to find what you want! Be patient and eventually you’ll get that diamond in the rough you were looking like for. Would you ever consider building or making your own custom antique cabinet? For me, half the fun is in the challenge of the hunt! Let me know what you think of the kitchen hutch in the comments below. I would love to know your thoughts.

    Love it.. you’re so creative

Thank you Joy!! YOU too!! xx

Yes, it’s that time of year when the temperatures drop and the leaves begin to change colour…and the bright colours of summer fade to the warm tones of Autumn. For Deb, this is one of her favourite times of the year. However, for Britt, this is merely a means to get to her favourite season…Winter! Let us help give you some inspiration to get that Fall Decor out of storage or maybe give you some new ideas for this cozy season.

If you love cozy fall home decor, you’ll love our friend, Brendt’s Hello to Fall Home Tour HERE!

Living in a 4 season climate in Alberta, Canada definitely makes it easier to change over your decor to match the seasons. Both Deb & Britt like to stick with natural Fall decor pieces that give an organic and cozy feeling.

    fall porch ideas

One of the best places to start transitioning to Fall is with the decor on your front porch. Pumpkins are always a great option on the front porch. In our area, blue and green pumpkins are rare so we tend to stick to the more traditional orange shades.

Deb was able to grow a few variations of blue and green pumpkins last year that were gorgeous as well. It’s fun to go to a local pumpkin patch and search for the odd-shaped pumpkins that give a bit more character than the traditional perfect pumpkin.

Last year Britt scored a large amount of dried wheats & grasses that she placed in some vintage containers to create an asymmetrical Fall Front Porch.

Deb created a beautiful front porch with shades of Burgundy. Mums are a great option as they are readily available in our Central Alberta Region and at reasonable prices. Although if you live in a 4 season climate beware that Mums do not like the frost!

    AUTUMN Dinning Room

The next place we love to fill with Fall Decor is the Dining Room! Usually Autumn means more meals around the dining room table. Especially for us Canadians as we celebrate Thanksgiving in the heart of Fall.

Mini pumpkins are a great and easy option for creating a DIY Fall Decor Centerpiece. Some other options are using dried flowers. Deb and Britt love to dry their limelight flowers and fill Vintage French Containers with them. Gathering Larkspur in the late summer to dry also is a pretty option for transitioning to Autumn Decor.

You can also shop your local produce section for Fall Decor Ideas! This is both practical and pretty! Pears, plums, and apples are plenty this time of year and are pretty when displayed in unique containers! AND the bonus is that you can eat your decor too!

    Creating a Cozy Fall Home

When it comes to the other areas of our homes we love to start pulling out the chunky blankets. Fall is all about the layers so throw a cozy blanket on the bed or couch!

Want to learn how we edit our images…grab a free lightroom preset below!

It can be easy to get carried away with tones of Fall Decor, but sometimes simplicity can be just as cozy. So here are a few tips that we use to guide us from overdoing our Fall Decor.

Check out our friend Hannah’s @welivedhappilyeverafter 11 tips for subtly transitioning your home from Summer to Fall!

    DIY Fall Decor

Fall is a fun time to make a Wreath. Grab some dried wheat to make a wreath or often dried pussy willow wreaths will be available this time of year. Even if you only adorn your front door with a Fall Wreath it gives your home a welcoming feeling.

    Trick or treat

Britt grew up in a home with a Mom who LOVES Halloween and homemade costumes were always a big deal. Britt and her brother often won the Halloween costume contests at school growing up. Deb and Britt both have children that are at the perfect ages for enjoying the Spirit and Fun of Halloween.

Living in town Deb gets to make her front yard Spooky for everyone to see. Spider webs, scary witches and skeletons fill her yard in the last part of October.

However, Britt lives in the country and rarely has visitors so Halloween Decor is more for the kiddos! Britt’s kids love to spread out faux cobwebs everywhere they can think of. Simple bat cutouts are another great option for a simple pop of Halloween.

But the best part of Halloween for us has to be the costumes! Below is Britt’s family and friends dressed as the Adam’s Family.

We love that Fall Decor can still have the traditional feel of oranges, reds, and browns like it has for decades or you can branch out with shades of blues and greens. At the end of the day do what you love and only bring things that spark joy into your home. It is easy to get distracted by all of the ideas from Pinterest and Instagram. And it is fun to see what everyone is up to, but at the end of the day, it has to feel right for your family!

We hope you loved this fun, farmhouse fall decor post as much as we enjoyed writing it and are leaving here feeling inspired with all the fall feels! Let us know what you do to decorate your home for Fall by leaving us a comment below or share it with us on Instagram using the #VintageSocietyFallDecor ! Until next time…

Don’t forget to cozy up your master bedroom. Find out how Krista does it with a french costal vibe.

    Britt Hislop

Hi! To be honest I have multiples of every length and use them all differently. I used the 3M on my mantel and down the center of my dining room table last year. I use the 10M strand across my headboard. I use the 2M and 3M for in baskets. I used the 100M plugin on my patio. I have solar strands wrapped around my pillars at the end of the driveway! Sorry, that might not help but we really do use all of them. I will try and share more info on the Vintage Society IG page today in stories. Britt

This recipe looks yummy! But what on earth is a “knob” of butter?

    Hi there, it’s just a small amount of butter. Maybe 1.5″ x 1.5″ 🙂

    Mudroom bench options

Every great mudroom starts off with a good bench! However, before you select your bench material weigh out these pros and cons.

MDF Bench – Britt initially installed a MDF bench because it was affordable and initially looked good. BUT… MDF is not practical!! After the kids using the bench for a few years it was ruined! Even placing water bottles on an MDF bench can ruin it.

Wood Mudroom Bench – This can be a great option! You can use salvaged wood which is affordable. Plus a wood bench is durable.

Fabric Bench – In a light use space this can be a good option. A fabric bench adds texture and would be more comfortable.

Quartz or Stone Bench – The most durable bench you can install. However, this is the most costly option.

After the MDF bench was ruined in Britt’s mudroom she knew she wanted a more durable solution. She had Laporte Surfaces  out of Calgary, Alberta cut quartz to fit over her existing benches. Britt, chose the Eternal Staturio in a Matte finish from Silestone by Cosentino Canada to become her new benches. She loves that the kiddos can get their muddy boots on the bench and she doesn’t have to worry about water bottles ruining the bench anymore!

Let’s chat about some essentials you want to include when coming into your entryway!

As discussed above we chatted about the different types of benches you can build into your mudroom. Not all of us will have room for a built in locker system though. Placing a small, moveable bench is also a great option.

Having a place for your guests to hang their jackets is important. No one wants to come in and toss their jackets on the floor.

Especially when you live in a 4 season climate you will need a place to store off season items. Now, you don’t have to limit yourself to storing everything in 1 space. Britt, has a big closet upstairs that she stores jackets and gear that aren’t in season.

While some may opt for having a closed drawer below a mudroom bench we do not recommend this. Rather, using the space under the bench for shoes and boots is a better option. Plus putting wet and dirty boots in a closed drawer will only create a mess, trap odours and will ultimately ruin the drawer.

    Mudroom Layout

Of course the layout of a mudroom will vary depending on if you are starting from scratch or trying to work it into an existing space. Whenever possible try to be mindful of these things.

Door and mudroom bench locations. Be mindful of the door swing and clearance before placing your bench. Even thinking of the way the door swings can be important. You do not want the door opening and hitting the bench.

If you have the room, leave space for people being able to move away from the door to hang up jackets and take off shoes.

Britt had the luxury of designing her mudroom from scratch and there are some aspects she absolutely loves!

    1. The mudroom is accessed from the garage and the exterior. Half the time we come in from the garage, but the other half we come in from outside. She didn’t want to limit the mudroom space to only one access point. This view is from the garage in Britt’s house.

    2. The mudroom is adjacent to the laundry room. Especially living on the farm or in the country, things get muddy and dirty A LOT!! The kids can come in and immediately take off dirty, wet clothes before dragging them thru the rest of the house.

    Shop this space

    3. Having a sink in or near the mudroom is another great investment. Britt loves that all of the mess and grim can be left in one space before anyone comes into the main part of the home.

    Waitress Apron

    French Kitchen Brush

    Buckled French Market Basket

    French Soap on a Rope

    4. There is a large storage room next to the mudroom. While Britt did loose a large part of her storage room due to an unexpected water cistern system (500 gallon tanks had to be included in this room last minute) it’s a nice space to have. Having the extra hidden room allows Britt to keep the mudroom looking tidy when guests come over.

    5. Having multiple benches! In the home Britt grew up in, the mudroom was the “hang out” spot! So she wanted to carry this tradition on into her current home. Britt installed 2 benches facing each other which is perfect for seating when guests stop by. This is where Britt hangs out and chats with her Dad when he stops over. Britt loves that guests don’t have to take off their boots to have a visit!

Now we know mudroom lockers are the BIG TREND and so many are installing them …. BUT hear us out!

Britt installed the mudroom dividers on top of the bench, but as you can now see the dividers are GONE! Did the dividers serve a purpose? No they didn’t! The lockers were a waste of space and didn’t stop the kids from mixing up their belongings. Britt also thinks it prevented things from staying cleaner and tidier.

So many are also installing cabinetry in the mudroom where belongings are hid behind doors. Now if you are empty nesters we would say yes it’s a great option! But the reality of kids 1. putting their belongings in a closed locker and 2. closing the door is unlikely. Plus when you put wet gear in an enclosed space it creates smells!

Yes having a place to store and hide away some belongings is essential! Having open storage and places to hang items is JUST AS IMPORTANT! Style and function need to co exist and when you make things hard for kids to use, they ultimately won’t.

So far no one in Britt’s home are missing the dividers! Without the dividers it also makes the bench more functional for sitting on as well!

We hope you have found these tips and advice on Mudroom Benches and layouts useful! If you could have your dream mudroom what would you include?

Rhonda from Hallstrom Home wrote an amazing post on mudroom’s as well! Head over to check out her ideas!

Are you loving the locker-less mudroom ideas we shared? Sarah from Grace in my Space also just went locker-less and we are loving it! Head over to check out her ideas!

And a mudroom that we are absolutely obsessed with is Amanda from The Ginger Home! Her mudroom even has a dog wash station! Head over to check out her ideas!

Love the new mud room design!! Your style is always inspiring me ❤️❤️

Thank you so much! Loving the fresh feel of the space!

Great article! As a child we had a rack where we hung our wet snowpants, mitts etc on. While not neat and tidy looking we had dry warm clothes to put on the next morning. No musty smells. Love the idea of having the washer and dryer in the mudroom. Fantastic time saver.

I love what you say about the lockers such a helpful tip. I’m hoping you can help me with the space between the 2 benches and through the mudroom space what is a comfortable space … 4ft from , between bench to bench??? Or can it be less… minimum suggested is huge help … thankyou!

    Farmhouse Bathroom Renovation

5 Proven Tips to Make a Tiny Bathroom Work

Living with a tiny bathroom isn’t fun, am I right?! A bathroom is one space in a home that needs to function well as it serves for so many purposes. It took 6 years for my farmhouse bathroom renovation to happen but… Friends!!! The day is finally here!! I have been waiting weeks to share my final bathroom reveal with you all and I couldn’t be more excited to have partnered with Wayfair for their One Room Renovation Challenge on this one!! The finished product is Ahhh-MAZING!!!! It actually turned out even better than I had expected, which is what every home owner wants right?! As big as this beauty of a house is, the bathrooms are SUPER teeny weeny so I had to come up some pretty BIG, small bathroom ideas to make it all work! Take a peek below at the before and afters as well as the top 5 PROVEN tips I used to make sure I got everything I wanted in this tiny bathroom!

It has been a hot minute since we bought this big ol’ house and for some reason our two year plan of renovating the bathrooms and kitchen have turned into a six year plan! Isn’t that always the way though?! One tip I always give my Interior design clients, is to plan a space to function for double the time you think you will be in it! I hear from so many people that say they are only going to be in a home for 5 or 10 years but that time quickly turns into 15-20!! You might as well make it beautiful, practical and functional even if you only plan to be there for a short time… always keeping costs in mind of course!

In the Beginning…. A Bathroom Disaster

This space was BAD people…. Like so bad that we almost didn’t buy the house because of it!!!! The first time I walked into this space I pretty much walked right back out and told the owner, thanks but no thanks!!! The drywall was falling off, there was black mold all over the tub surround, the vanity was SO old…. and like I said, it was such a tiny bathroom BUT after leaving the house and thinking about it non-stop for a few weeks in a row, we decided to take another look! Well fast forward a couple years and here we are now! We have renovated SO much of this house already and for some reason we left the bathrooms and kitchen for last… I guess because we knew that they would be the priciest and there were so many other things that needed the work, like the roof, the attic and grass/fencing so my kids could have a yard to play in!

    Before the Renovation

We did our best to ‘spruce’ up the main level bathroom to be functioning for our little family but knew it wouldn’t be too long until we could rip it all out and put in what we really wanted! I simply used a DIY concrete counter top mix and went over the arberite and refinished the floor with a cork flooring we found at ReStore in Calgary. Then it was just a coat of paint and a pretty shower curtain and VOLIA no more yucky bathroom… well at least a less yucky one anyways!   We continued to work on the areas of  the house that needed it the most, but this year we couldn’t take it anymore! It was time to get going on the worst space in the house! Mr. Mac was even done with it, which tells you it was time! Take a peek at my best renovation tips and more before images of the bathroom here.

    Before the Renovation

Game Changer Ideas for tiny Bathrooms with farmhouse style

I knew that I didn’t want a traditional vanity for this space! I needed something that wouldn’t feel bulky or big, like a standard cabinet vanity can.  The space in this bathroom was so small and as much as the storage value is great in a cabinet style vanity, I knew I could come up with other storage solutions that would work for our family and still allow for an airy, open concept vanity. You can also achieve this feel with a wall mounted or pedestal sink. I suggest you weigh out the pros and cons of having a space that feels bigger with an open concept vanity or going with a bigger, bulkier vanity. To keep with the farmhouse theme I have in my home, the vanity is an old antique desk that I finished to raw wood using these steps!

I found this stunning farmhouse, vessel style sink on Wayfair and I can’t even tell you how happy I am with it!! I was nervous about the splash factor with a vessel sink but this one is absolutely wonderful! We positioned it just far enough away that the water doesn’t hit the drain plug below which helped eliminate the splash back as well. I love how wide it is and that it is flat so I can place objects and bottles in it without them falling over. I was also able to add a beautiful wall mounted faucet with a built in soap dish! One thing I have always tried to do through out the renovation of this house was to stay true to the age of the home. I feel like the polished chrome color of the fixtures and the added details of the soap dish and porcelain handles do just that!

In order to do the open concept vanity, I had to think outside the box on storage solutions. I chose to add a big antique basket below to hold some everyday toiletry’s, additional toilet paper and towels. I also found some beautiful antique jars that I use on my open shelves to hold Q-tips, cotton pads and Epson salts as well as an antique French bread prover that I use to hold all of my daily makeup and lotions. I love the texture and personality that all of these items give the space and they are honestly used by me EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!

    3. Open Shelving

I knew I needed a bit more storage then what I had in the basket under the vanity so I decided on open shelving! As much as open shelves scare some people, as long as you keep your décor simple and intentional on them, they can be very attractive and practical! Like I said above, I use all the items on my shelves every single day and they really help to draw the eye away from the yucky toilet below that had no where else to go in the room!

It’s always a good plan when renovating or planning a new space to think about an area that you may want a bit of extra space! I HATE looking at a beautiful tub that is riddled with bottles of shampoo and conditioner or even worse, having to pull out your bath products every time you need to use them. We planned for this and added some major storage right beside the gorgeous shower faucet in the tub! I wanted the tub and faucet to be the star of the show in this space so making sure my hubbies razors and my purple shampoo bottles where hidden was essential. Although I didn’t add storage behind the mirror in this bathroom, I do love that spot as well for as much storage as possible.

A HINGED DOOR ELIMINATES AN ENTIRE WALL SPACE IN A SMALL BATHROOM, ADDING A POCKET OR BARN STYLE DOOR OPENS UP A TON OF REAL ESTATE!

I honestly wanted to add a pocket door in this space instead of a barn door because I wanted to add the gorgeous door trim I have everywhere else in the house but unfortunately that wasn’t an option for me so I went with a barn style door! I can still fit a hanging towel behind the slider and in the end I love the look of it. I kept the hardware very simple and hung an original door from this house we had in storage!

    Farmhouse Bathroom Reveal

One feature that made me super nervous to change was the door to the bathroom entrance. It originally went right smack into the middle of my kitchen, which let’s be honest, is just gross and uncomfortable for everyone! The only option I had to relocate it was around the corner of the kitchen, right under the back staircase. I was worried about losing the natural light that the door opening into the kitchen gave and that opening up the wall on the other side we would find something we didn’t want to find, like asbestos! You can never be sure with an old house! We took our chances and it TOTALLY paid off! No asbestos, no hidden surprises! I also had some big beautiful leaded glass windows that I had salvaged from a house in Calgary so I decided to put a transom in the wall above where the old door used to be! This would look after my natural light issue in the kitchen!

I also LOVE the gorgeous countertop from Silestone by Cosentino that I decided to add to the top of the vanity. It was the perfect touch and once again much more practical then the wood surface which would require refinishing over the years and would show serious water damage with time. I wanted something that would be easy to wipe down, keep clean and would be beautiful as well!  I went with a color called White Zeus, which is about as white as my beautiful sink to keep it consistent! I wasn’t wanting any competing textures or colours because I knew there would be enough going on in this small space already! The countertop was installed by the amazing and talented folks at LaPorte Surfaces! The customer service was incredible from both of these companies!!!  I would highly recommend using Silestone products for a kitchen or bathroom!

The classic, freestanding soaker tub and stunning
shower faucet are surrounded by stunning Carrera Marble subway tiles that complement the matching Carrera Marble 1” X 2” herringbone tile flooring! I chose to go with a matching grout color, called Rain, to blend it all together! My favorite feature about my gorgeous new tub, other than just looking at it, is how DEEP it is!! My kids could go swimming in it which is exactly what I wanted (It makes it harder for them to splash the walls when it is that deep too ) The shower faucet is not only the diamond of the room but it is also so practical. We use this room to wash Jersey Girl, our 1 year old English Cream Retriever, so it is wonderful to have the hand held shower wand. Yes we wash our pup in here…. I planned for that, hense the deep tub and practical, (but beautiful) shower faucet!

One other area I was a bit nervous about was mixing all the antique brass with the polish chrome metals! I needed to have the right amount of both to make the small bathroom look balanced! I found my vanity sconces on Wayfair and honestly planned just about everything else around them! I LOVE adding a tiny bit of industrial décor into my home with contrasting elements like white shiplap and fancy chandeliers. These fixtures were just so me! When I found the stunning but simple antique brass mirror and the beautiful toilet tissue holder I was all set! The look came together just as I envisioned!

I used an 8” pre made shiplap for the walls to match the profile of the shiplap I have in other parts of the house! I decided to use an outdoor solid stain instead of paint on the walls for the protective value and of course it’s my fav white Oxford White by Benjamin Moore.  I also got the central chandelier from a local antique store!

So that’s a wrap folks! I hope you have enjoyed my bathroom reveal and the Wayfair One Room Renovation Challenge! Hopefully my tips for a tiny bathroom have also been useful and my farmhouse style has inspired some of you! I would LOVE to hear what you think??! Leave me a comment below or send me an email! It always makes me happy to hear what you think!

floors are sometimes looked at like an extra wall in a space! Adding Painted Floors into a space is a beautiful way to give an extra element to your interior design! We have both been threatening to paint some of our floors for WAY too long.we both finally took the plungeSo LET’s dive into the process for both painted hardwood and cork floors and how they are holding up!

    Why We wanted Painted Floors

For years, both girls had been admiring painted floors from some of our favourite ladies on Instagram like Liz Marie Galvan and Karin Buitenhuis. Painting the floors a lighter colour seemed to make the home require less home decor… both Britt and Deb love minimizing and felt like white floors always helped make this style easier. Every detail that goes into a room with white floors almost becomes amplified thus making it even easier for LESS is MORE!

It also seemed bizarre for Britt that she was willing to paint her exterior patio floors white but not her interior floors??? Seems a little backwards right? But she loved her white painted patio pavers. So she  figured it was time to bring the white inside!

For Deb, she had already painted her backstair case when she moved into the house years earlier and had almost pulled the trigger on painting her attic floors white years ago but in a last minute decision, kept the natural instead! She has painted other flooring in her home and rentals in the past as well, including linoleum, so deciding to paint some of her hardwood on the second level didn’t seem like such a stretch.

Let’s chat quickly about the type of floors.  For Britt, her husband and her moved around a lot in the few years leading up to building her home. She was constantly learning what she DID and DIDN’T want in her forever home.

Deb is a hardwood girl at heart, she loves the look and feel of hardwood and brought back as much of the original hardwood flooring in her 115 year old home as possible. Hardwood floors are resilient and long-lasting. They are also very easy to clean and maintain.

Both girls have lived with carpet … and NO THANK YOU, sorry for you carpet lovers but the amount of germs and mites that live in carpets is to much! Please, if you have any indoor pets carpets is just simply not a good choice. Have you every pulled old carpet out of a home before?? It’s sooooo gross!

Laminate flooring can be an affordable option if you are on a budget but both Britt and Deb aren’t huge fans of it.

The worst floor type for a large space would be TILE! Cleaning the grout is tedious and the hardness of the floor can have negative impact on some people’s bodies. If you stand a lot…having tile flooring can cause serious back issues to worsen.

Both girls have also had cork flooring in the past and loved it!  Before Britt’s Vintage Society career, she had a yoga studio and when they renovated it, they put in cork floors! Insert angels singing! The softness and its ability to handle some water without swelling she knew she had to have it in her home! One thing about cork is that the options are not so various. Usually as it fades and ages it can generally pull orange, red and pink tones so you have to be careful about selecting colours.

Britt have never regretted choosing cork flooring but she always thought her floors would fade to a lighter shade. Almost 5 years later and they were the exact same colour but her style had changed a bit so bring on the paint!

How We knew Painting Our floors was an option

The moment Britt discovered painting her floors was an option was when she was painting her walls and some paint got on the floor that she didn’t notice and it dried on. When she went to try and get the paint off the cork… nothing worked!! Paint remover, steam mopping, every cleaning solution you can think of…nothing worked. To get the paint off, Britt was literally removing the top veneer of the floor off. This had her start to wonder what it would look like if she painted the floors.

Deb had looked at multiple heritage homes to purchase before they finally go the one they are in! A lot of these older homes, had the floors painted at some point along the way! She loved the look of the painted floors and the way it looked with wear overtime. She always knew she would paint the floors somewhere in her home at some point.

Both girls recommend starting with a smaller area first and making sure you are happy with the look and the wear and tear of the area before committing to a large space.

When Britt redid her office, she thought she would paint those floors. However by the time she finished the shiplap she was just ready for the room to be put back together. During this time she had purchased a can of Benjamine Moore Tapestry Beige (the colour Liz Marie used on her floors) to put on a sample piece of cork. While the paint adhered to the cork well, Britt didn’t love the colour.

Fast forward 6 months and she was ready to commit to painting the floors in her master bedroom (this room has a small hallway off the main living space so it wouldn’t be so obvious if the painting was a flop).

Now that she had committed to painting the floors it was time to pick a colour.  Britt is kind of infamous for customizing colours (almost every colour in her house is a custom colour she has created). As much as she tends to lean towards warm shades of white she knew choosing a cool tone white would be better.

Britt got a sample of Revere Pewter by Benjamine Moore but Mr. WhiteFamhouse actually thought it was too dark (I was shocked). She picked out her favorite light grey colours and headed to the local Benjamine Moore paint store.

If you want more advice for picking out the perfect paint colour you can check out our blog on selecting the perfect paint colour for your home.

To create a custom colour get as close to the colour as you can find on a sample. Then ask your paint mixer what colours and the amount of each colour go into making that colour. The closest colour she could find to the desired paint colour was Gray Owl by Benjamine Moore. Britt wanted to take out some of the yellowish tones to make it a true grey without having it be a blue-grey colour. She mixed up a can of this new colour and honestly, it is so amazing!!! We think Benjamin Moore should let us make paint colours… girls can dream right!

Deb had found a couple solid stain colours from the Beauti-Tone line that she liked but in the end she wanted something that would be right between Benjamin Moore Grey Owl and White Whisp. She had used White Whisp in her home on the walls in the past and loved it! In the end, she decided the colour Britt came up with was right where she wanted it to be.

The custom colour the perfect light shade of grey! Here is the custom formula in the Benjamine Moore Solid Stain.

Cork floors are naturally porous the paint partially absorbed into them. No need to worry about creating a surface that the paint would have to adhere too. We HIGHLY recommend getting a sample piece of flooring similar to your own flooring before you fully commit to your actual floors.

Harwood floors are very easy to paint, but the key is completely in the prep!

Painting floors is how Britt updated her bedroom! Check out how Marci Schneider updated her bedroom!

    Painted floor process

One of the biggest pieces of advice is to keep a vacuum nearby. You almost vacuum as you go because pet hairs and dust seem to continually appear throughout the entire process.

    STEPS TO PAINTING Cork FLOORS

The only prep Britt did was giving her floors a good steam clean. She hasn’t used any kind of chemicals on my floors. Having only steam mopped for years she didn’t have to worry about getting any residue off. If you have been using floor cleaners we recommend washing your floors with a diluted vinegar solution prior to painting.

After a paint spill happened in the front entrance of Britt’s home she was quickly forced into painting the main area of her home! The paint that spilled was an oil based paint. Before the spill, Britt was considering trying the oil based primer on her floors so this was the perfect jumping off point!

Two coats of the Zinsser Oil Based Primer were used on the cork floors.

Then instead of using the FLOOR & PATIO floor paint that she used the first  time round in her bedroom she wanted to try a solid stain. Britt used this solid stain on her patio pavers outside and loved it!

Britt allowed about 1 hour after the first coat before applying a 2nd coat. Then I left it for about 12 hours between the 2nd and 3rd coat. Then I applied the 4th and final coat about an hour after the 3rd coat.

Solid stain paint has a matte finish which Britt loves. She applied 2 coats of this paint on top of the Oil Based Primer.

This method for her painted floors has held up extremely well!

    Steps to Painting Hardwood Floors

Step One – Lightly sand the area using a belt or orbital sander and  60 grit sandpaper. If it is a very large area, you can use a drum sander.  When painting a floor, it doesn’t need to be sanded down as much as a floor you are refinishing with stain and poly.

Step Two – Clean the area throughly! Vacuum the surface and wipe it down with  hot soapy water and a damp cloth. If you are refinishing an old floor, make sure you try and get everything out of the cracks in between the boards, otherwise the debris will stick to your paint brush or poly brush!

Step 3 – The Primer Coat – Apply a coat of primer to the surface. Deb also used the Zinnser Shilac based Primer. She was sure she would need to apply more than one coat on the old floors because they would bleed, but this product was amazing and only require one coat.

Step 4 – The Colour Coats – Apply 2 coats of solid stain in the colour of your choice. You can use a paint brush to cut in on the edges and corners then a roller for the main part of the floor. Make sure to allow the stain to fully dry before applying the next coat. Deb waited about 8 hours in between each coat!

Step 5 – The Polyurethane Coat – Apply a thin coat of poly to the surface. Deb uses an outdoor, water based, non yellowing clear coat to the surface with a stain brush! Make sure to use a brush that is no bigger than the plank size for the best results! Again, make sure to let the coats of poly dry thoroughly before apply the next coat. The product Deb uses dry’s quickly but it should still be given ample time to dry before applying the next coat. Make sure to do at least 2 coats of poly for proper protection, if you are painting a floor in a bathroom you can do even more coats.

For the cork flooring process, it is important to be as gentle on the floors for the next week or so as possible. While Britt was painting, it had been getting a lot of rain and so the humidity was higher than normal. The floors felt a bit tacky but they still walked on them. Britt was a bit nervous that she had painted the coats to close together or that I had chosen the wrong paint.

But after about a week I could feel the paint harden and they started feeling more durable!

For the hardwood flooring process, the cure time is much quicker and the poly dries to a hard finish right away! In fact, you have to move quickly while applying it to make sure it doesn’t harden while you are still working with it!

Caring for painted hardwood verses painted cork is quite different. After 2 weeks of having the floors painted, Britt steam mopped her floors! While she was nervous the paint would just peel off it held up perfectly fine!! Any scuffs that my steam mop won’t take off have wiped away easily with a Magic Eraser! Over the weeks, the paint on Britt’s cork floors absorbed into some of the pours of the cork giving it a more textured appearance. She is so excited and in love with how these floors turned out!

Deb’s painted hardwood on the other hand, was ready to go the next day! She allowed a full 24 hours for the polyurethane to harden but then it was back to biz as usual! Any wear and tear over the next few years will be just the patinated look that Deb is wanting and she uses a double strength vinegar with essential oils and a mop to clean it.
